Little did Clovis-based Monica Mares know that she’ll fall in love with her own son, 18 years after giving birth to him and giving up for adoption. Mares’ son Caleb Peterson met her late 2015 when she picked him up from his father’s house in Texas after getting in touch with him on Facebook. After a few weeks, they confessed their romantic feelings for each other and the two decided to go ahead and make their relationship public, despite the fact that incest is a criminal offence in the United States.

Currently, the two have been ordered by the court to not see or talk to each other, and are awaiting trial later this year, reports Daily Mail.

Mares and Peterson reportedly said they are ready to face anything as long as they get to be together. “He is the love of my life and I don’t want to lose him. My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us not courts, or jail, nothing. I have to be with him. When I get out of prison I will move out of Clovis to a state that allows us to be together. Caleb is willing to go through the same thing. Whatever it takes to be together,” Mares told the Mail.

Mother of nine, Mares gave birth to Peterson, whose birth name was Carlos, when she was 16 and gave him up for adoption soon after. She never raised him as a mother and this thought led the two to accept each other as lovers. “It was love at first sight” for Maris but initially it was motherly love, which eventually transformed into romantic feelings. For Peterson, it was whole new feeling to someone dote on him and care for him.

“At first I told him, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know how you are going to react to this. I’m your mom and you’re my son, but I’m falling in love with you’,” she reportedly told him. “You know what I am too. I was scared to let you know,” he responded. In medical terms, such an attraction is called Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA), which is sexual attraction between close relatives, such as siblings or half-siblings, a parent and offspring, or first and second cousins, who first meet as adults.

Initially, the affair was under covers but eventually the police found out about it and charged the two for incest.

They faced a lot of criticism from their friends, families, neighbours and even from people who didn’t know them, but the two stuck together. “There’s a lot of negative comments I read on Facebook and things – people say it’s disgusting, it’s gross, she’s your mom but it doesn’t hurt me or affect me at all. If they were in my situation or if they were to find out that somebody they loved was actually related to them then they’d be saying the exact opposite,” Peterson was quoted as saying.

This year, this is the second similar case that has created waves. In April, another US mother was reunited with her birth son – 30 years after she gave him up for adoption – only to fall romantically in love with him. The two planned to get married and have kids together. (Read the story here)

Their trial is awaited and the two are willing to go to any lengths to be with each other. Mares told Daily Mail that she would give up meeting her children if she had to choose between being with Peterson or her children. Peterson, on the other hand, said he would wait for her if she goes to jail and he doesn’t.
