The White House received some unusual guests this Friday. Stormtroopers and R2-D2 descended on the White House simultaneously as they did in theatres across the world. The White House had organised a special screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Gold Star families — families of soldiers martyred in the Iraq War. The First Lady Of The United States (FLOTUS) even tweeted their welcome.

President of the United States (POTUS) was to join the Gold Star families in the screening of the film, a prospect he clearly looked forward to. He commenced his end-of-the-year speech by remarking,”Clearly, this is not the most important event that’s taking place in the White House today. There is a screening of Star Wars for Gold Star families and children coming up. So I’ll try to be relatively succinct.” And relatively succinct he was. After 50 minutes of serious discourse on the achievements of 2015 — including climate change, terrorism, healthcare and diplomacy — POTUS attempted to make a dash for the screening after fielding questions from the Press.

The Stormtroopers and R2-D2 joined Press Secretary John Earnest on stage at the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, and even assisted him as he addressed the media.

This isn’t the first time that the Obama’s have shown how cool they are. Earlier this month, FLOTUS appeared in a music video rapping in support of college education.
