Bangladesh’s Chittagong zoo hosted a grand party for a wedding party of two lions. The royal affair was to celebrate the union of the two beasts. The lion from Rangpur zoo was brought to Chittagong only last month, while the lioness is a long-time resident at the zoo.

In the beginning the beasts were kept in separate cages, then the zoo authorities put them in the same enclosure to mark the marriage. The couple feasted on a 22-pound heart-shaped meat cake later. The zoo hopes the couple will draw much-needed visitors.

The specially manufactured wedding cake was made mainly of meat that included beef, chicken, eggs and fried liver.

Some 400 guests attended the reception laden for long-time resident and lioness Nova and newcomer Nabha, reported the AFP.

“This is an unusual function no doubt. And we made an effort to give a festive look to this zoo with colourful decorations to welcome the union of the lion and lioness,” government administrator of Chittagong district Mesbah Uddin told AFP.

“We brought the lion named Badsha, renamed Nabha, from the Rangpur zoo to stay here with the lioness Nova for the purpose of breeding,” Uddin said.

A pre-wedding party was also held for school children that included a small concert, deputy zoo curator Monjur Morshed said.

The lioness was born in the very zoo some 11 year ago and had lived without a male partner for most of her life until her new partner arrived.

According to a Bangladeshi website, Gram Bangla news, while the lions were kept in adjacent cages, Nabha’s inclination and liking for Nova was quite evident. Seeing the proximity of the duo the doctors at the zoo decided to let them share a cage.

Nova and her sister Barsha have been through a rough patch after losing her mother Lakshmi and father Raj. Though the zoo authorities tried to find suitable partners for the two sisters they were not successful. Barsha has been sent to Rangpur zoo to another lion to start a family there.
