‘Black ribbon’ tribute for former president APJ Abdul Kalam from Google

APJ Abdul Kalam's final rites will be carried out in his hometown of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu

Internet search giant Google paid respects to former president APJ Abdul Kalam, who passed away on Monday, by marking its homepage with a black ribbon.

Google has always honoured popular and famous leaders on their birth and death anniversaries with creative doodles.

Dr Kalam, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna — India’s highest civilian honour, a former president and a scientist, had collapsed in the middle of a lecture to students at the IIM in Shillong. Shortly afterwards, his death was confirmed at a local hospital. As the news of his death became public, tributes poured in from across the country with personalities from across different walks of life remembering his contributions to the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pranab Mukherjee, cabinet ministers and leaders from different political parties had paid tributes to Dr Kalam, when his body was flown to Delhi from Shillong. On Thursday, his funeral ceremony will take place in his hometown of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
