Indians are not alone to be stunned by the over populated pigeon community; many European countries too are troubled by their overwhelming presence. from rural to urban, these birds have been part of our daily lives. But often we are much bothered by their bountiful presence and the icky shitting habits. So, they have tried to adopt measures that can control their population but in a non-violent way. Yes, authorities in Barcelona have decided to use contraceptives!

Pigeons are present in the historical city in large numbers and to control their growing numbers the authorities had been culling them. Killing of these innocent avian creatures has irked many animal right activists and the decision to use pills certainly have them cheering.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, UK, the authorities hope that in coming five year the number of bird will be reduced by as much as 80 per cent. “From April of 2017, 40 special feeding dispensers will be installed in the different districts of Barcelona, each containing contraceptive food. The first results will be analysed at the end of that year,” the report informed.

The civic body is hopeful that the method will work and they can permanently drop the culling procedure. To begin the process the city authorities will first conduct a census of the bird in December and January. Then the feeding dispensers were will be installed at various locations.

“We will be using nicarbazin which acts first on the younger birds,” a council spokesman told the newspaper.

Apparently, the idea is not new and the use of contraceptive pills is “operating successfully for more than 15 years throughout Europe, including in several Catalan municipalities and in the cities of Alicante and Valencia.”
