Even Queen Elizabeth II’s mass birthday party earlier this year had a guest list of 10,000 people in London. But that’s just a shade to Rubi Ibarra Garcia’s impending birthday bash in Mexico, for which – at last count – 1.3 million people had already RSVP’d!
And the number’s increasing, what with the Facebook invite having gone viral.
Excited for his daughter’s 15th birthday, Crescencio Ibarra Garcia invited their community of San Luis Potosi and posted a video creating a Facebook event. What was supposed to a close-knit affair turned into a global one after he unknowingly left the invitation public. Surprisingly, over a million people said they were going to the party!
In a video posted online, he said that “everyone is welcome” to the party featuring local bands, a meal and a horse race is scheduled for December 26. “Hello, how are you? We invite you this 26 of December to the 15th birthday party of our daughter, Rubi Ibarra Garcia,” Ibarra says, while his daughter smiles along with his wife.
A girl’s 15th birthday party is a special event in Mexico, as many regard it as the time when she comes of age. Lavish parties with live bands are not that uncommon practice and girls often flaunt princess attires and accessorise wearing tiaras and make-ups.
It is not sure why and how the video went viral, and following its popularity so many people responded to the invitation. Memes followed across social media platforms and even famous Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal did a comical spoof impersonating her father. It is rumored that one national airline have also offered discounted air-tickets to the nearest airport, from where they could attend her party.

Reportedly, the police has been approached just in case many people actually turn up. Overcoming the initial shock, it seems the Ibarra family is also enjoying the memes and spoofs.
