After the God Particle, the world may see another revolutionary discovery, that of Dark Matter,a very important component of the universe,in 2015,Professor Rolf Heuer,Directore General of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) told reporters at a press meet at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP).

The Dark Matter might be the next big thing to unveil in 2015 when we open the machine again with a high frequency,” Heuer said.

“The next three years CERN would be upgrading their machines and SINP is in talks with the director general as to how it could participate,” said Milan Sanyal, director,SINP. He said that SINP’s association with CERN goes back to over a decade with the ALICE. ALICE is the acronym for A Large Ion Collider Experiment.

SINP has also been associated with Compact Muon Spectrometer (CMS),an experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN,for the last two years and also with another experiment,ISOLDE for the last one year.

“Saha Institute also has an umbrella programme for CERN collaboration in the pipeline. Although budgeting has not been done,we have been assured that it would be well funded. On behalf of the institute,Prof Sunanda Banerjee would be the project leader,” Sanyal said.

Talking about India joining CERN as an associate member,Heuer said it was in process. “The department of the atomic energy had taken the initial steps but finally it is the Prime Minister’s Office that will decide,” he said, and added that CERN was waiting for a written application from the Indian government for the associate membership.

“Once we have a look at the application and cross check,it is put in process. He also said that for a membership and associate membership, there had to be an internationally valid treaty between CERN and the respective country.

Asked what privileges would be enjoyed by an associate member country,he said: “Residents of an associate member country can apply to be staff members, for fellowship, and as researchers at CERN. Besides,an industry of a member country can participate in the tender process. So,if it gets an order,it will mean winning some money back but more than that it can prove its skills as some of these projects are research and development projects. Later you can use it as a valuable reference.”
