The business around PCs may not be as happening as it is around smartphone these days. Sales might be plummeting, but still no device has been able to replace it when it comes to creating things and being productive. People can argue in favour of tablets, but they are still more for consumption than creation.
HP Envy 13
HP’s Envy series has been all about great looks while trying to showcase HP’s engineering might. With Envy 13, HP basically took the big and beautiful Envy 17 and crunched it into a smaller size to create an elegant Windows 10 laptop. So is this the best Windows 10 laptop right now? Let’s me try and answer
Specs: Windows 10 Home 64-bit | 2.60 GHz Intel Core i7-6500U | 8GB DDR3 SDRAM | Intel HD Graphics 520 | 256GB SSD storage | 13.3-inch Full HD(1920 x 1080) LCD | HDMI | USB x3 | 1.36 kg
Price: Rs 87,990
What is good?
You are buying this laptop primarily for its design. It’s one of those well designed laptops in the market, you won’t think twice paying for. If you want a Macbook Air running Windows, this is that computer. From the silver metallic finish to the wide trackpad, there is uniformity and elegance. HP Envy 13 has a flair that is just hard to miss, it bleeds smoothness everywhere in its design. Sure, it makes others envious, even those Macbook Air owners.
The design has been mastered so well that this one is currently the lightest laptop in the market. It’s lighter than Apple’s acclaimed Macbook Air and it is seriously going after it. The Envy 13 weighs 1.36 kg and if you are someone switching from a 2.5+ kilo machine, you might probably keep checking the backpack if something is even there inside. Also the Envy 13 is just half an inch thick, yes just 0.5 inches or 13mm to be precise. HP has undoubtedly built one of the finest Windows hardware in times.
HP has got three of the key aspects right – display, keyboard and trackpad. The HP Envy 13 comes with a 13.3-inch Full HD anti-glare display, a real pleasure for your eyes. Just shoot your browser to YouTube and most videos start natively in 1080p and you can experience the rich and vivid colours. It is not just colours, the viewing angles are perfect too. I always had someone saying, the colours are popping even from the side. I wonder what next set of PCs with OLED displays will offer.
HP has also done a great job with Envy 13’s keyboard and trackpad. There was a day when my office system wasn’t ready and I used Envy 13 as my work computer. I was more productive than ever before. I found myself typing faster and more reliably and also was more flexibly managing my Windows. Arguably the best thing with Windows 10 computers has to be their trackpads. The trackpad on Envy 13 is second to none in the business. Its smooth and gets every Windows 10 gesture right. I prefer to swipe three fingers from the bottom to open task view and switch windows. The action was real quick and smooth here.
Of course, it runs Windows 10 – the “greatest Windows” ever developed by Redmond team. I really like the way Cortana integration works here thanks to those additional microphones. Though there is no Intel RealSense camera here, the fingerprint scanner works extremely fast with Windows Hello integration. Even the operating system and workflow was more smoother on Envy 13 than any other machine I have tested in recent times. I am in all praise for this one.
What is not good?
The thing I didn’t really like with this one is its battery. It lasted me around six hours at the most and sometime I was searching for the plug point just after four hours. I think there is certainly some issue around the battery management of this machine. I hope HP can fix this.
Another annoying thing is the way it vents out heat. If you working with this one in your lap, you will understand the sound of heat dispensers and probably experience air, hot air. I tried pushing this machine by playing NFS at max setting, though the game worked, the machine got extremely hot and was pushing out hot air like crazy.
This machine is not meant for gaming or any heavy processing work.
Should you buy?
HP Envy 13 is definitely the computer Apple would have made with Windows inside. This is HP and it is really beautiful and elegant. It nails not just design but performance too. Its quick for most average use cases and smooth too.
Most Windows 10 add-ons work here like a charm and its keyboard and trackpad are definitely better than most market offerings. If you are out in the market for a thin and light notebook, this is the one to pick.
So is it the best Windows 10 laptop? I would reserve my view on this till I check Dell’s XPS 13 which has similar offerings and if you can hold on for sometime, HP’s own Folio G1 showcased at CES 2016 could be the next best Windows 10 laptop.
