Back in May, Microsoft revealed its plans to bring Cortana to Android and iOS in an effort to put Microsoft services on all major platforms. It was announced that Cortana will be available on Android and iOS after Windows launch on July 29 but finnish site Suomimobiili has found the APK and has uploaded the same to Google Drive for download.

I downloaded the app on a basic Intex Aqua 4G+ smartphone and here are the first impressions. The Cortana app for Android works just like its Windows Phone version with access to Notebook and comes with a dark theme and contents show up in a white area.

Cortana can be queried via voice or text entries and is accessible just like any other Android app. The main difference between Android app and its Windows counterpart is the ‘Hey Cortana” feature, which isn’t available on Android version. Asking Cortana to text some contact or call somebody works just fine. Ask Cortana to tell a joke, she does that.

My favourite feature is asking Cortana for driving directions. Its not good at telling you transit directions but driving directions work fine. While Bing Maps is the map service on Windows Phone, here Google Maps can be selected for mapping. You will need a Microsoft account to access Cortana on any Android device and uses Bing as default search provider.

Microsoft is already running a preview in US and is expected to roll out preview version to other markets in the coming months ahead of official rollout. The iOS version is expected later this year.

While the app didn’t crash or showed any failure but it’s still a leaked build so users would be better off waiting for official release from Microsoft. Oh and when you try saying thanks to Cortana for all her answers, she shows her humble side.
