Airtel has rolled out over 20,000 units of Aadhaar based e-KYC solutions across India, following the notification by the Department of Telecom, Government of India. The e-KYC solution allows users to instantly activate Airtel SIM cards using Aadhaar card. The digital verification is fully secure, claims Airtel. Plus, it eliminates paperwork.
According to Airtel, over 50,000 customers, which includes those in rural India, are using this digital solution. In the first phase, Airtel plans to bring in the e-KYC solution in over 500,000 retail outlets, including those in rural pockets, over the next few months.
“Aadhaar based e-KYC has significantly enhanced the customer experience by enabling faster and paperless onboarding process and we have received very positive response from the customers and channel partners. We plan to deploy this solution in majority of our general trade stores, including those in rural pockets. We believe, this initiative is a great case study for Government’s Digital India vision,” said Ajai Puri, Director – Operations (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel.
To get an Airtel prepaid/postpaid via Aadhaar-base verification system, users need to get their biometrics verified at the Point of Sale. The details will be matched with the UIDAI database. Once the credentials are verified, the connection will be activated instantly. The retailer at the Point of Sale will also be registered under Aadhaar. Airtel launched its Aadhaar based e-KYC solution across Delhi NCR last month.
Vodafone’s e-KYC solution was rolled out last month as well. Vodafone India has developed an app that enables retailers to activate connections using e-KYC.
