YouTube, the world’s largest video streaming platform has announced new smart feature to its offline service. YouTube had launched Offline feature in 2014 to help users save videos to view later when without incurring data charges. Now the service has got even smarter.
The new Smart Offline feature takes advantage of lower data rates offered by telecom service providers during night.
“Many mobile operators already offer discounted data and promotions to their subscribers, for the Internet during late night hours. Today, we’re beginning to roll out a feature called Smart Offline on YouTube that lets you takes advantage of these cheaper data rates as offered by your mobile operator, without requiring you to stay up late at night,” the company posted on its blog.
YouTube’s new Smart Offline feature works simply by tapping on the grey arrow which now offers option to select ‘Save overnight’. The ‘Save overnight’ feature works only on cellular networks and not on WiFi. Selecting ‘Save overnight’ offers users an option to schedule video download.
The Save offline feature is gradually rolling out to Airtel and Telenor subscribers starting today. Users need to have updated YouTube app to make use of this feature.
