WhatsApp is the new hunting ground for those looking to circulate spam messages in the name of various telecom providers. Fakes messages about free 4G unlimited data and voice calls from BSNL and Airtel have now gone viral on the app.
Several spam messages, purportedly from BSNL and Airtel, have been circulating on WhatsApp claiming the telcos are offering free unlimited 4G data and free calls. The messages comes with link and ask users to open these in order to claim the offer. This seems like an obvious ploy to steal the personal information of those who click these links. Or worse it could come with a malicious app download that the might get installed on the phone without explicit user permission.
The hoax sent by BSNL on WhatsApp reads, “With every 4G ExPress SIM you get unlimited data and calls for 1 year, with additional freebies. BSNL 4G ExPress SIM features: Unlimited 4G Internet, unlimited calls, unlimited SMS, 4G internet speed upto 10 Mbps and free SIM card. Get your FREE BSNL 4G ExPress SIM Card Today. Offer is valid till 31st Dec, 2016. Register Now“. This is followed by a link which actually takes users to a phishing site.
Airtel users have been getting similar hoax messages through WhatsApp. A spam message, which has been doing rounds on a popular messaging app, reads:
“LOOT OFFER FOR ALL AIRTEL USER:- Due to Jio, Now Airtel market is down so Airtel is activating Unlimited 4G, 3G data for 3 months. Visit Following link to Activate for airtel 3 months 4G, 3G Pack and enjoy. Visit Now <link removed>. Get Airtel free Internet/ and free 300 minuts Local calling every month for next 3 Months. So activate this offer,Thanks airtel I got Unlimited Data. Dial 123 to Check your balance. *Enjoy Friends*”
In wake of Reliance Jio’s “Happy New Year Offer” and the raging war between major telecom giants, scammers seems to have sensed an opportunity to cheat gullible users with free 4G unlimited data and calls. We’d urge our readers to ignore such messages and be safe!
Also once again don’t click on any links which come with these forwarded message. These are either phishing links that can steal your private information or could come with malicious apps.
