WhatsApp has finally added a new mentions feature in Group Chats. Users can now tag individuals in a group chat. For those caught in a big family or office groups, this might be a useful way of communicating with one particular person. The feature has gone live on Android and iOS as well.

So how can you tag a person in a WhatsApp Group Chat? Just type @ symbol inside a group chat, and it will start showing the names of group members you can tag. Tap on the name of the person you wish to mention, and then send the message. The advantage of this feature is that you can pick out a specific person in the Group chat for whom the message is meant. Or better still in case of a group fight you can at least pick the specific person you’re targeting, while the rest choose to ignore the messages.

The big downside to this: Notifications will now appear on muted chats as well, thanks to the mentions features. Thus ensuring that you can no longer afford to ignore anyone, even if you really wanted to do that.

WhatsApp was rumoured to bring the feature earlier this year, but it has taken some time for the feature to arrive. WhatsApp has a slew of new features like the ability to format text (bold, italics, underline), share PDFs, Docs as well and files from third-party apps like Google Drive, iCloud and Microsoft’s OneDrive.

In iOS 10, WhatsApp now has integration with Siri and users can send messages or make WhatsApp calls straight from Apple’s voice-assistant.

WhatsApp has already indicated that it plans to bring new Services to the app, and will let these interact with customers. Soon messages from your bank or your airlines will make an appearance on the app. According to leaks, WhatsApp plans to add new features like the ability to scribble on photos, as well as selfies with flash on the app soon.

However, the world’s most popular messaging app is under criticism after a recent privacy policy change, where it said it will share some information including phone numbers with its parent company Facebook. WhatsApp is giving users the option of signing out of this information sharing for the initial thirty day period.
