Oculus rolls out Parties and Rooms for Samsung Gear VR

Oculus has rolled out two new features – Parties and Rooms – for Samsung Gear VR. The features will be available for Rift in 2017. Parties and Rooms enable users feel that that same ‘sense of presence with other people’ in VR. Friends on VR can easily be found by linking your Facebook and Oculus accounts. You can search people using their real names or Oculus names as well.

For you to start a voice call with your friends, they need to be online. Oculus Parties allows up to three friends to join a voice call from anywhere in VR. The Party tab can be found in Oculus Home. To start a Party, just click on the tab and select friends you want to chat with. “Parties ensure that no matter where you go on the platform, you can always communicate with your friends,” said the Oculus Team in a blogpost.

Oculus Rooms, on the other hand, is like a private virtual space to spend time with friends in VR. “We focused on enabling social activities that mirror how you may hang out with friends in real life,” the Oculus blogpost reads.

Once you are in a Party with your friends, you can join Oculus Rooms as well. It will give you activity options such as to gather around the TV and watch videos, play matching or guessing games, or hit the group app launcher to jump to a multiplayer game like Dragon Front or Drop Dead.
