Vivo V5 has just been launched in India and joins the list of smartphones with a focus on the selfie-camera. If your budget is somewhere around Rs 18,000-Rs 19,000 and you’re looking for a smartphone where the selfies will look good, don’t worry. The market now has three very strong options in this price point from Vivo, Oppo and Gionee.
The latest to enter the Indian market is the Vivo V5, which comes with a 20MP front camera that also has selfie-flash for better shots in low-light. In terms of specifications, Vivo V5 sports a 5.5-inch HD display. It comes with the 1.5 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage which is expandable up to 128GB. The rear camera is 13MP and the phone has a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.
Vivo V5 has an all-metal body along with a design language similar to most other smartphones in the market right now. It has curved edges, and looks classy. Vivo is known for designing stylish phones even at a budget pricing and it continues to do so with the V5 as well.
So what about the selfies? In our review, we though the front camera was a “little inconsistent in its performance.” We wrote in our review, “The field of view is large and wide enough to fit a few friends in the frame without any major lens distortion or the need to crop out the tallest and the shortest friend. However, most of the pictures taken through the front camera turned out to be a little overexposed, even while clicking indoors under fluorescent lights.” Read our full review here.
Like other selfie-cameras, the Vivo V5 has a lot of options under the beauty mode, and given this is a 20MP camera on the front, it manages to capture details in the front photos. Also we only recommend using the “front flash only as a last resort.”
So how does the Vivo V5 stand in comparison to the Oppo F1s and Gionee S6s? Below is a specifications chart with the three phones.
Oppo F1s is the more-budget friendly version of the Oppo F1, which also comes with a 16MP front camera. The Oppo F1s’ front camera might not have a selfie-flash, but this is a pretty good smartphone when it comes to taking selfies. Oppo F1s’ front camera comes with Beautify 4.0, which has seven beautify levels and two skins tone modes. The rear camera is 13MP.
In terms of specifications, the Oppo F1s has 5.5-inch HD display, an octa-core MT6750 processor with 3GB RAM and 32 GB ROM (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card). The battery is 3,075mAh and the rear camera is 13MP. The smartphone runs ColorOS 3.0 on top of Android 5.1.
In our review, we had liked how the Oppo F1s’ selfie camera performed. The images from the selfie camera were “bright and crisp even indoors, where lighting might not always be ideal,” and the beauty mode doesn’t make your skin look unnaturally white or blemish free. As a selfie camera, we had called this one of the best in the market given the price point.

Gionee S6s is another selfie-smartphone, but it doesn’t boast of 16 or 20 megapixels on the front camera. The Gionee S6s has an 8MP front camera, but with selfie flash as a feature to improve photos in low-light conditions.
Gionee S6s has a full metal body and 5.5-inch full HD display. So in terms of a display resolution, the Gionee S6s has an edge over the other two phones. It runs the MediaTek MT6753 octa-core processor clocked at 1.3Ghz with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. The rear camera is 13 MP, while battery is 3,150 mAh. Gionee S6s runs Android Marshmallow 6.0 with company’s Amigo 3.2 OS.

Gionee S6s front camera delivers on the promises and gives bright pictures, which is what most people want in selfies. Just like other selfie-smartphones, the front camera’s UI has a beauty mode, slimming mode etc, to make your face look even better.
