Samsung Z2, a new Tizen OS based phone could be launched in India today. The company has sent out invites for a new smartphone launch in the country. Tizen is Samsung’s own OS, and it powers the company’s smartwatches including the Gear S2, as well its other smart products like the Samsung fridge, TVs etc. However, Tizen-OS has not exactly been a raging success on smartphones as Samsung had hoped in the passed.

Samsung launched the Tizen-based Z3 in India last year at a price of Rs Rs 8,490 with the OS being the USP of the phone. The Z3 had a 5-inch super AMOLED display with 720p resolution, 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum processor coupled with 1GB RAM and 8 GB storage expandable to 128GB. It also had an 8MP rear shooter with F2.2 aperture and a 5MP camera at the front capable of shooting wider 120 degree selfies.

In case of the new upcoming Tizen Z2, leaks from Galaxy Club, a website based in Netherlands, have revealed the smartphone which actually looks similar to the earlier Z3. Other leaks have suggested the new Z3 will come with 4.5-inch display, 2000mAh battery, 1GB RAM, dual-SIM and 4G with VoLTE support. It could be priced under Rs 5000 making it a new budget 4G-capable offering from Samsung, which has Tizen OS on it.

Samsung’s first Tizen OS based phone, the Z1 was also launched in India at a starting price of Rs 5,700, and the company later claimed it has sold over 1 million of these phones in the country. For Samsung though, Tizen has eluded success, and the Z series has not been able to dent Android’s popularity in the Indian market.

Interestingly a report on GSMArena also claims Samsung might be working on a new flagship with Tizen OS called Z9. The website quotes data from export/import website Zauba, which shows data for “a model number SM-Z930F” entering India. This one could be called the Galaxy Z9, says the report, although it is unlikely to be unveiled today.
