Samsung has launched the second-generation Tizen-OS based smartphone Z3 in India. The smartphone is priced at Rs 8,490 and Samsung says the tighter integration between software, services and hardware is the USP of the device.
The Samsung Z3 features a 5-inch super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. While its not pixel dense by any means, the use of Super AMOLED panel delivers deeper colour reproduction. The smartphone is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum processor coupled with 1GB RAM and 8 GB storage expandable to 128GB.
The Samsung Z3 sports an 8MP rear shooter with F2.2 aperture and a 5MP camera at the front capable of shooting wider 120 degree selfies. The front selfie camera also comes with features like auto selfie and beauty enhancement mode. Samsung Z3 runs Tizen OS v2.4 which brings several UI enhancements and contextual services. Samsung also announced a new cricket game based on Unity gaming engine for Z3 smartphone.
At the launch event, Samsung did not speak about the specifications of the device except how beautiful the Super AMOLED display is. Instead of the Tizen OS, the focus was on services that come bundled with the device. Samsung claims the device would be “rewarding, engaging and efficient” and Z3 has the potential to beat the sales of its predecessor.
H C Hong, President and CEO, Samsung India said the launch “re-emphasises India’s significance as a key centre for innovation and development on the Tizen Operating System”.

The Samsung Z3 also supports USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, GPS. The battery on the Tizen Z3 is 2600 mAh and this is a dual-SIM smartphone. The phone however is 3G and despite a lot of devices in the price range now offering 4G. Samsung says it has studied the user needs and hence decided to opt with 3G connectivity.
The highlight of Samsung Z3 is the bundled apps. Samsung has developed a new ‘My Galaxy’ app which is basically an aggregator of various offers and services. Samsung says its app will give far better offers than similar services. It has tied-up with Amazon, ibibo, Pizza Hut, paytm, payback etc to offer great deals and offers to customers. The app is launched with Samsung Z3 but is also available to all Galaxy users from the Google Play Store.
Samsung has also brought Mix Radio to its Tizen platform which offers lifetime subscription to the service offering curated mixes from a catalogue of over 30 million songs. The Mix Radio also supports regional languages like Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Bangla, Odiya and Marathi.
Samsung says Z3 is not only made in India but also for India. Samsung re-iterated that it collected data from Indian users who bought Z1 and based on the feedback, they built services that Indian users requested for.
“Tizen offers simpler and nimbler user experience. With Tizen and Z3, we see an opportunity to foster the feature phone segment and help users get most things done on their phones,” said Asim Warsi, VP – Marketing, Samsung India.
Samsung Z3 will be available online exclusively on Snapdeal and will also be available offline from various retail channels. The smartphone will be available in Gold, Silver and Black colour options.
