Nokia is set to make its big comeback to the smartphone segment in 2017. And rumours around the former mobile leader’s upcoming phones have started to gain momentum. With Nokia expected to make a return in the market with Android OS, there are some serious expectations from the company given it had such a formidable reputation in the mobile phone world before losing out to Apple and Samsung. Now according to a tipster on Weibo, the new Nokia Android phone will come either come with a 5.2-inch or 5.5-inch screen with 2K display.
According to the leak on Weibo, the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, which is interesting because by 2017 that processor will be quite old and newer flagships from Samsung, Huawei, etc will have moved on to Snapdragon 830 series.
It will feature a metal unibody design and will be waterproof and yes, Nokia will go with a Carl Zeiss lens for its Android smartphone just like it did with the premium Lumia smartphones. The Lumia smartphone cameras were among the best, even when Android phones had started dominating the market. This is one area where Nokia could have a considerable edge when it returns to the market.
But let’s not forget the smartphone market has changed drastically since the time of the Lumia 1020 which came with a 41 MP camera. Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Google Pixel are two of the best Android phones in the market with great low-light performance on the camera front. Nokia will have to outdo these two if it wants to make its presence felt in the premium market.
But it looks like premium is not the only price band that Nokia is considering. In a separate leak, specifications of an entry-level device called Nokia Pixel were spotted on Geekbench. Nokia Pixel can be see running Android 7.0.1 Nougat, with a Qualcomm 200 processor clocked at 1.19GHz coupled with 1GB RAM.
However, one of Nokia’s first handsets in 2017 could be the D1C. Nokia D1C has already been benchmarked on Geekbench and Antutu. The Antutu benchmark shows the phone to be running on a Qualcomm 430 chipset coupled with an Adreno 505 GPU. It will be coming with 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, and will be running on Android 7.0 Nougat. The phone is sporting a 1920 x 1080 pixel screen resolution, comes with a 13MP primary camera and an 8MP front shooter.
We’ll have to wait and see what Nokia introduces in 2017, but given the nostalgia for the company, its return will be closely watched by media and smartphone lovers.
