With the Nexus 5X and 6P launch in India, Google wants a bigger slice of the premium smartphone market share in India. The Nexus 5X has been launched at a price of Rs 31,990 while the Nexus 6P starts at Rs 39,999.

David Shapiro, Google’s Senior Marketing Director, in an interaction with the Indian media, said the premium smartphone market was growing in India at 41% and that their Nexus phones are firmly aimed at that the segment.

While he refused to specify market share targets for the new Nexus smartphones, he justified the pricing saying that these are premium smartphones with the best Android experience.

“India as a market is hugely important to us and we’re trying to bring our top products here as soon as possible. We’ve worked with LG and Huawei have worked extremely hard on the pricing and we feel like we’ve found a good balance between affordability and performance given the specs,” he added.

When asked whether the prices of the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei 6P could fall in the coming months, Shapiro said that they don’t really control the pricing in India and that it was hard to comment on the same.

The Nexus brand, which was first officially launched in India with the LG Nexus 4 in 2013, has come a long way in terms of pricing. While the Nexus 4 started at Rs 25,999, the Nexus 5 was launched at Rs 28,999.

The pricing and specs had ensured that Indian users who wanted pure Google phones could get them for less than Rs 30,000.But with the entry of Nexus 6, Google crossed the Rs 44,000 price mark and firmly put the Nexus series in the premium segment. With the Nexus 6P pricing, Google is sticking with the premium segment. And given that the P in Nexus 6P stands for premium, the pricing should not really come as a surprise.

In India, the Google Nexus 6P is still cheaper compared to some of the other premium smartphones and their launch price. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + starts at Rs 55,000, the Galaxy Note 5 costs Rs 53,900. The Apple iPhone 6s will launch in India at a whopping Rs 62,000, while the 6s Plus will start at Rs 72,000.

And for those who are not to keen on crossing the Rs 40,000 price bracket, Google is hoping the Nexus 5X with its slightly ‘more affordable’ price will do the trick.
