Google’s Pixel smartphones will be water-resistant but with a lower-rating, according to latest report in Android Police. The website says the Pixel and Pixel XL will come with IP53 rating, which make the devices dust resistant and water resistant as well, but only up to a certain angle. This means the smartphones will be able to survive very low pressure of water only when held vertically up to 60 degrees. This allows water droplets to slide down the smartphone’s surface. Plus, the device can’t be exposed to water for more than 5 minutes.
The reports explains, “The “3” in IP53 means a device will not experience damaging water ingress when upright at an angle not to exceed 60 degrees from vertical while being sprayed by relatively low-pressure (somewhere between 7-20PSI or 50 to 150kPa) water.” This might be a big let down for customers, especially when Pixel smartphones are being touted as competitors to Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 series. The iPhone 7 has IP67 rating, while the Samsung Galaxy S7 series also has the same rating.
Google Pixel and Pixel XL are set to launch on October 4. HTC is working on these smartphones, that ditch the Nexus branding in favour Google branding. Pixel and Pixel smartphones are code-named ‘Sailfish’ and ‘Marlin’ respectively.
Ahead of the launch, Google has started teasing its new smartphones. The YouTube video uploaded by Google shows a rectangular search box taking the shape of a smartphone with the date October 4 mentioned next to it and the Google logo appearing at the end.
A recent Nest commercial in Netherlands gave away the the first look of the device. The ad shows a woman holding what looks like the Pixel smartphone. The leaked pictures hint at prominent aluminium edges in Google’s Pixel, while the rest of it has white glass panel.
According to reports, the smartphones will run Android 7.1 Nougat OS. Leaks suggest, Marlin is the flagship smartphone of the two devices with a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display. Marlin will be powered by Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
Google’s Pixel smartphone is rumoured to have a 5-inch display and Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal memory.
