It looks like the display on Google’s new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones can be turned on and off via magnets, which could allow for flip cases to be used on the devices. Google’s phones are designed, engineered entirely by the company, but let’s not forget that HTC is the actual manufacturer for these phones. Google has outsourced the job to HTC and it looks like the feature from the HTC phones has made an appearance on Pixel as well.
According to 9to5Google, the “reed switches” which were a part of the HTC phones appear to have included in the Pixel series also. In HTC’s phone, this is used in coordination with Magnetic flip cases to turn on/off the display or to display information such as time/weather in Dot view cases. The report adds the sensor is near the “G” logo on the back of the Pixel phone.
For now, there are no flip cases designed for the Google Pixel phones, and even the official website doesn’t have any special accessories listed for the Pixel phones yet. In India the Pixel phones have been launched in most multi-brand digital retail stores like Croma, Reliance Digital, eZone, etc. On the online side, Flipkart is the exclusive partner for Google’s smartphones.
We’ll have to wait and see if special cases are launched for the Pixel phones. We have not yet tried a magnetic cover on the Pixel XL device. Google Pixel launched in India in October with a price tag starting at Rs 57,000. For Google, Pixel is premium series with focus on its software. Google Assistant, unlimited storage for photos on Google Photos app, the Pixel launcher are all highlights of the new smartphone.
Pixel phones run the latest Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with 4GB RAM and come in 32GB and 128GB storage versions. The rear camera is 12.3MP with EIS, HDR+ and there’s an 8MP front camera.
