The concept of edge-to-edge display has taken the smartphone industry by storm with big names such as Apple and Samsung rumoured to be working on the same for their next flagship devices. Apple’s iPhone 8, which is set to launch in 2017, could sport a bezel-free design, while the Galaxy S8 will have a Plus version with a bezel-less display and no home button in the front.
Xiaomi’s Mi Mix is one such phone which has generated a lot of interest since it was unveiled last month. The concept smartphone was unveiled in China, and comes with a 91.3 per cent screen-to-body ratio. Mi Mix has a 6.4-inch edge-to-edge display with a custom 17:9 ratio aspect. And other Chinese rivals like Huawei and Meizu are also working on smartphones with bezel-less design as well. Let us take at look at everything we know about bezel-less smartphones so far:
Xiaomi Mi Mix
Xiaomi Mi Mix looks straight out of the future with its edge-to-edge display. The company is using high-grade ceramic for the smartphone and“seamless connectors to fuse Mi Mix’s body without any external adhesives”. The front camera in Mi Mix is placed at the bottom, which will rotate on its own when a user wants to take selfies.
However, the device didn’t prove to be durable when a user in China accidentally dropped a testing unit of Mi Mix. The smartphone met the same fate as expected from any other smartphone with a ceramic body. The ceramic frame simply came off and the display got visible cracks on it. The user posted a picture of the damaged unit, which shows the device has a dent on upper left corner suggesting Mi Mix fell diagonally. Going by the picture, Mi Mix scores on style, but compromises on a sturdy build.
Specifications of Mi Mix include: a 6.4-inch edgeless display, full ceramic body, and Snapdragon 821 processor with 4GB RAM + 128GB storage. There’s a 16MP PDAF rear camera. It has a 4,400 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology. The smartphone runs the MIUI 8. It is available at 3,499 yuan.
Apple iPhone 8
The year 2017 is supposed to mark the 10th anniversary of iPhone (the first iPhone was introduced by Steve Jobs in 2007) and Apple is expected to bring about a radical change in the design of its next iPhone. According to a report from the Barclays Research analysts, the iPhone 8 will sport a curved, bezel-free design next year in 2017.
The Barclays Research analysts note iPhone 8’s borderless design will mean these phones will sport the same size as the current generation iPhones. However, Apple will introduce a 5-inch and 5.8-inch display version, which is bigger than the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus series. The iPhone 8 Plus version will come with an OLED display, and Apple is relying on Samsung and LG, along with Foxconn-owned Sharp for this in 2018. Apple is also expected to remove the Home button in the next version of the device.
Samsung Galaxy S8
With the Galaxy Note 7 now officially dead, Samsung has a lot riding on its next flagship phone launching in 2017 – Galaxy S8 – expected to feature a little to no bezel design. According to a report by TheInvestor, Samsung will be bringing an edge-to-edge or a bezel-less display that will be based on OLED technology. Park Won-sang, a principal engineer at Samsung’s display making unit has hinted that the phone will be coming with a 90 per cent display area ratio.
According to leaks in Korean media, Samsung Galaxy S8 will come in 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch display variants. The bigger S8 variant will be bezel-less and won’t have a home button either. Samsung is expected to stick with only a curved screen for the S8, suggest reports.
Meizu Pro 7
Meizu Pro 7 is set to compete with the Mi Mix with its borderless design. The Pro 7 is said to come with very high screen-to-body ratio (that appears to be close to 100 per cent) with a pop-up 8MP front camera. Leaked images of the phone were spotted on Chinese networking website Weibo. According to reports, it will feature a 5.62-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution.
Meizu Pro 7 will be powered by Helio X25 processor with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB internal storage. Meizu Pro 7 is said to come with mCharge 4.0 that can reportedly charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent in just 40 minutes. The phone is expected to be fitted with an ultrasonic biometric fingerprint scanner, which allows the user to place their finger on the display to unlock the device. The device is slated to launch on December 24, according to a report.
Going by rumours, Huawei is the latest to join the party with its bezeless concept smartphone it calls a ‘quad-edge screen’. According to a report in Phonearena, all four corners of this borderless smartphone will feature a curved-glass design. However, full details of the device is still unknown.
