Apple has officially announced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at a press event in California. The new iOS devices are expected to catapult the declining iPhone sales across the globe. Apple has now sold over 1 billion iPhone, making it the best-selling product for the Cupertino company. Apple CEO Tim Cook already calls it the best iPhone ever created by the company. Apple iPhone 7 starts at $649 and will come in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB storage option.

Since the launch of iPhone 3G in 2008, Apple has followed a two-year naming cycle. With iPhone getting a name first and a S variant in the following year. Apple is calling its latest iPhones – iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus – but this time, the iPhones don’t come with a new design, construction or engineering to talk about.

Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus follow the design first seen on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus but feature a more streamlined antenna design. With new iPhone 7, the antenna simply blends into the aluminium unibody casing. This should also help avoid antenna-gate on the newer iPhones. The new iPhone now comes in jet black colour variant and another black variant simply called Black. The iPhones will also be available in gold, rose gold and silver colour variant.

Apple has also completely redesigned the Home button with force-sensitive solid-state taptic engine. The new Home button provides haptic feedback for every small little action like notification or quick action.

The new Apple iPhone are also water and dust resistant. Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were resistant to some extent but this is the first time, Apple is admitting at the stage. Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are IP67 certified, now engineered with new sealed assembly.

Apple is making OIS standard with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The new 12MP rear camera on iPhone 7 comes with f/1.8 aperture. There is six-element lens, quad-LED true-tone flash and Apple designed image signal processor. Apple iPhone 7 has improved significantly in low-light. There is also RAW support.

Apple iPhone 7 now comes with 7MP iSight camera at front, a bump from 5MP one found on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The front camera supports wide colour gamut with auto image stabilisation. The best camera ever in an iPhone.

On the other hand, iPhone 7 Plus justifies its name with an additional image sensor. Yes, iPhone 7 Plus comes with dual rear camera setup with one wide-angle lens and another one with telephoto lens. With iPhone 7 Plus, the biggest feature is the addition of 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. Apple is very confident about this feature.

With the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple is also adding shallow depth of field to iPhone for the first time. The software uses image sensing and machine learning to sense the depth in an image and adds depth effect while clicking in portrait mode. The feature will be available as software update for iPhone 7 Plus users.

The new iPhone also brings new specifications onto the table. Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus feature 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display respectively, like its predecessors. The smaller iPhone gets a 1334 x 750 pixel display while the bigger display still boasts of a full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) panel. As expected, Apple’s new iPhones support True Tone display technology first seen on the iPad Pro. The display incorporates extra light sensors for more natural display light as user moves around different lighting condition.

Apple iPhone 7 may not differ from the iPhone 6s aesthetically but it is much faster now. Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are powered by company’s A10 Fusion chipset, a quad-core CPU which is 40x faster than A9 found on 6s. The chipset  Apple is not revealing the exact amount of RAM packed into its new iPhones but consumers can expect speedy performance throughout the iOS experience.

Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus now support stereo speakers and have moved to lightning for earpods connector. Apple is ditching headphone jack and supports digital audio and provides power and audio control. Apple lightning connected earpods will come bundled with every iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and also come with an adapter for lightning to 3.5m headphone converter.

Apple is also introducing wireless product called AirPods. Apple Airpods feature Cupertino-designed W1 wireless chip with infrared sensors for detecting when they are in your ear. There is also voice accelerometers for Siri application and comes with 5 hours battery life.

Apple says iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will last two hours longer than iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
