Samsung has announced its latest fitness tracker, Gear Fit 2 globally but the company is just not stopping there. It is expanding beyond fitness trackers with its first truly wireless earbuds called Gear IconX.

Samsung Gear IconX is a fitness earbud that connects to your phone without and guess what, there are no wires between the earbuds themselves. Samsung Gear IconX is a pair of earbud which look like traditional earbuds with an eartip and wingtip but drops the around neck wires we are accustomed to.

Samsung Gear IconX is, however, not the first of its kind. A little known company called Bragi had announced world’s first wireless earbuds on kickstarter way back in 2012. It entered full-scale production in 2014 and is available for pre-order now.

Samsung, on the other hand, thanks to its scale is going more mainstream with its wireless earbuds. What makes a wireless earbud special is the independence they offer. While independence is great, the biggest compromise is the battery life. Samsung says its Gear IconX will last about an hour and a half. Samsung Gear IconX earbuds are stored in a case which in turn charges the earbuds. Samsung says its case provides up to two full charges, which means you always need to carry these cases.

Samsung Gear IconX comes with 3.5GB built-in storage and when music is streamed from the storage, Gear IconX lasts up to three and a half hour. Each earbud has two microphones and are water resistant.

Samsung Gear IconX can also track your activity just like its Gear Fit 2. It has sensors to track steps, heart rate and calories burned. It syncs all the data with Samsung’s S Health app.

Samsung Gear IconX earbuds are not immediately available but will launch later this year in white, blue and black colour options. If Samsung prices this one aggressively then it can definitely make wireless earbuds mainstream.
