Garmin Corporation has unveiled its vívofit fitness band in India at a price of Rs 9,990. The vívofit will be available only on Flipkart from August 7 in black and slate colours. There will be two size options. The first 500 customers will get a pack of three colour bands worth Rs 1,990 free.
The company intends to make Indian consumers more health conscious and claims vívofit is the only band to offer personalised fitness goals and track progress of users belonging to all age groups.
Fitness bands have not gained much traction in the country mainly because of the low cost to benefit ratio. Garmin has added several good-to-have features at the price of Rs 9,990 which might help the vívofit stand apart.
Vívofit comes with a decent sized curved display which shows steps, goal countdown, calories, distance, time and date. It also tracks the sleep patterns of the user. Powered by a commonly available replaceable battery which lasts for over a year, the vívofit is water-resistant (up to 50m) and is compatible with ANT+ heart rate monitors.
Vívofit learns users’ current activity level, and then assigns an attainable daily goal. As milestones are met, vívofit adjusts the goal for the next day. A red move bar appears on the display after one hour of inactivity and alerts users that they have been sitting too long. Walking for a couple of minutes will reset the move bar, and get users out of the red. Setting the sleep mode when going to bed allows vívofit to monitor the quality of rest.
Users can sync vívofit with Garmin Connect, a free online fitness community and can see a complete picture of their progress through reports and graphical representations, including their total sleep hours, as well as periods of movement and restful sleep. Also, at Garmin Connect, users can join online challenges with other vívofit users or start their own competitions with friends.
According to an IDC report, wearables took a huge step forward over the past year and shipment volumes will exceed 19 million units in 2014, more than tripling last year’s sales. From there, the global market will swell to 111.9 million units in 2018, resulting in a CAGR of 78.4 per cent.
“A market for wearables has been already built. The demand for smartwatches will grow considerably in the next couple of years. We are into fitness for the past 10 years and with vivofit we want to target the masses. In India, people are slowly starting to pay attention towards staying fit. Vívofit is a simple device which aims to help people to track minute fitness details,” said Ali Rizvi, national sales head, Garmin India.
Garmin vívofit might increase the traction of fitness bands in India as it is unique to its competitors in this price range.
