Audio-Technica has been really active on the Indian sound stage for the past few months. It might not have the footprint of the top players, but they sure have products to stay in the reckoning. The two units that I tried out from this company have been impressive and now I have my hands on the ATH-SPORT3, what the company likes to call ‘personalised fit sports earphones’.
So what do they mean by personalised fit?
Nothing new, really. The earphones come with a loop that holds the earphones tightly on to your ears. Plus, you have the option of choosing between Fine Fit sound isolation tips and Active Fit tips that allow some ambient noise in. The latter is a safer option if you are jogging in a park or walking on the road. The design is very functional and the cords have a wavy design that keep them from tangling most of the times, not always. The design is such that the dual cables enter the Y just under your chin and does not get tangled in your clothes. The tips are very easy to use for long hours and don’t come off easily if you are exerting yourself. Also, the IPX5 rating means you can run in the rain with this set.
Despite being very compact inner ear headphone, the Sport3 has 10mm driver that offers a rich range of sounds with very little distortion. I tried it with a range of music genres and was satisfied all the time. It has the right amount of bass, not over powering, certainly not jarring. But on the other end of the spectrum it also does a superb job with pure vocals. From Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours to workout friendly numbers like Halo 4 by Nemesis and Rocky theme song, all played well on the Sport 3.
Specs: DRIVER: 10mm; FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 10 to 25,000Hz; MAXIMUM INPUT POWER: 200mW; OUTPUT SOUND: 102dB/mW; IMPEDANCE: 16Ω; WEIGHT: 9.5g; PLUG: 3.5mm gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini-plug
Priced at Rs 3,999, the Sport 3 is among the best earphones out there for workout and jogging freaks. It is perfect for those who like to stretch themselves as well as their headphones frequently. Look at ATH Sport 1 and Sport 2 options if you want to save some money.
