India’s highest ranked doubles tennis player Sania Mirza turned 31 on Wednesday. The past year has been a difficult one for the Hyderabadi who has slipped from World No 1 in the rankings to World No 9 due to injury concerns for her partners and to make things worse, she could go under the knife herself.
She has had to go through a flurry of partners this year ranging from Barbora Strycova, Yaroslava Shvedova, Kirsten Flipkens and closed out the season with Shuai Peng. “It has been a tough year for me with my partners getting injured. All in all, I still finished close to the top 10, so I am happy with the year,” she said, on the sideline of an award function in Mumbai.
Now she is contemplating whether to undergo an operation for the bone spur in her right knee. “I have been off for about a month. I have a couple more weeks to take rest, just trying to get used to…I will see if I need a surgery or not. Yes I have a little bit of problems,” she went on to add.
