On Thursday Angelique Kerber became the second German player to rise to the top of the World rankings after dethroning Serena Williams. And on Saturday she proved why she is compared to the said German player – Steffi Graf – as she lifted her game and eventually the US Open trophy.
Playing Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova in the final, Kerber had her moments of rise and fall but in the end, when it all mattered, she raised her level to come back from a break down to win the contest 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. This is her second Grand Slam trophy of the year having already won the Australian Open. She also reached the final of Wimbledon but came out second best then.
