India beat arch-rivals Iran to defend Kabaddi World Cup title, which they had won in 2007 against the same opponent. India, who had qualified for the final beating Thailand by 73-20, edged past Iran by a 38-29 margin. India trailed 13-18 at the half way mark but came back strong in the second half of the game. Ajay Thakur, who was India’s key raider throughout the tournament, didn’t disappoint in the final as he finished as the top scorer of the game with 12 raid points. However, Anup Kumar side was tested hard by Iran’s captain Meraj Sheykh, Abolfazl Maghsoudlou and defender Fazel Atrachali. India equalised the score to 20-20 in the 29th minute and shifted their gears from there on, not letting the Iranians take easy points.

Thakur, who changed the complexion in the second half, was helped by some resolute defending from the hosts.
