Maharashtra: Vaishnavi Stone Udyog Ramesh Wanjale Memorial Hockey Tournament begins in Pimpri

TWELVE CITY and two outstation teams will lock horns in the inaugural Vaishnavi Stone Udyog Ramesh Wanjale Memorial Hockey Tournament, which begins at the Major Dhyanchand Hockey Stadium, Pimpri from Monday.

The week-long tournament, to be conducted under the aegis of Hockey Maharashtra, will be played on a league- cum-knock out basis. The league phase will witness the 14 teams divided into four groups. Two groups will have four teams each, while the other two would have three teams each.

The top team from each of the four groups will advance into the semifinal.

The tournament offers a total cash purse of Rs. 97,000. The winners stand to gain Rs 50,000, while the runners-up will take home Rs. 25,000. The winner of the third-place play-off will receive Rs. 15,000 and the fourth placed team will get Rs. 7000.

Tournament organising secretary Sachin Kamble said, “The tournament has on offer a hefty prize money which we felt would encourage the players to give their best.”

Meanwhile, Stanley D’Souza has been named Tournament Director, while Shridharan Thamba is the tournament secretary and Umpire Manager.
