On the occassion of 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the sporting fraternity joined the chorus of saluting the martyrs of the three-month long Kargil War. The Indian Army had fought Pakistan in May-July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and along the Line of Control (LoC). Earlier the cabinet and other political leaders paid homage to the slain Indian soldiers.
India had launched ‘Operation Vijay’ to tackle the Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants who infiltrated the Indian side of LoC. Every year 26 July is celebrated as “Kargil Vijay Diwas” to honour the sacrifices of Indian war heroes.
Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Vijender Singh took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to glorify the sacrifices of the Indian Army in the war. Sehwag tweeted, “Bow down to the selfless heroes of our country on #KargilVijayDiwas We r at peace only bcoz of ur efforts&sacrifices.”
Laxman too posted on Twitter, “#KargilVijayDiwas I Salute our ever vigilant, dedicated, motivated Jawans who sacrifice their lives 2 protect our motherland #Inspiration.”
Other sporting personalities too hailed the sacrifices of the soldiers.
