Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel Saturday declared Netaji Subhas western regional centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Gandhinagar as a Centre of Excellence for para athletics. This will be the only centre in India catering to national and international para athlete in India, an official release said.
It said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports would provide separate funds for the proposed centre of excellence. This centre will be constructed at Sector-25, Gandhinagar, the release said.
SAI regional director R K Naidu welcomed the Sports Minister at the campus along with the national coaching camper of football Under-19 girls team which is going to play in Vietnam in coming days. Naidu gave a presentation explaining activities at the centre.
On this occasion, the minister announced that the government would launch a web portal through which anyone from any part of the country would be able to upload his details and photographs or videos to get immediate assistance by local SAI Centre or state.
He said that besides allocating funds to various centres to strengthen them, football, kabaddi and other games would be popularised on the lines of cricket.
He also said that his ministry would launch Khelo India programme shortly.
