After the Indian women’s hockey team won their second Asia Cup title on Sunday and qualified for the World Cup, Hockey India announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh each for the 18-member squad which triumphed in Japan. Chief coach Harendra Singh will also get Rs 1 lakh and members of the support staff Rs 50,000 each.
In the final, India beat China 5-4 in shootouts as the score remained 1-1 after regulation time. India remained unbeaten in the tournament and scored a total of 28 goals in it. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the victory of the Indian women’s hockey team.
Mushtaque Ahmad, Hockey India secretary general spoke to PTI and said, “This is truly a commendable achievement by the Indian team, bringing back the Asia Cup after 13 years. They have shown great spirit and determination to win this tournament and have rightfully qualified for the World Cup next year as Continental Champions.”
After the victory in Kakamigahara (Japan), captain Rani Rampal expressed delight over the performance of her side. “We are all extremely happy that we won the Asia Cup and have earned the qualification for next year’s World Cup on merit. The team gave a good fight to China. It was a high-level competition and we did not drop our level at any point in the game.”
