India and South Korea played out a tense semi-final. Although India were the dominant force for much of the match, South Korea took their chances well to not just keep India at bay but also be on the brink of winning the match. India were leading 1-0 in the first quarter and seemed to be on the way to scoring more. The second quarter turned out to be a completely different story with India conceding and South Korea giving them lots of problems.

The third quarter saw South Korea take the match by the scruff of the neck by taking the lead. India responded by attacking relentlessly and breought the game back to level at 2-2. The fourth quarter remained indecisive and the game went into penalty strokes. The penalty strokes were a tense affair and in the end, it was PR Sreejesh’s save that took India to the finals.

India had to settle for a draw the last time they faced South Korea. Since then, India have rallied well to finish top of the table going into the semi-finals.India had topped the league standings with 13 points after finishing their preliminary fixtures on Wednesday, but there was plenty of drama on the last day of the league fixtures.

Pakistan defeated China 4-0 to take their points tally to nine, the same as Malaysia before the last outing against the Koreans, who had seven points ahead of the last match. Pakistan’s goal-difference was far inferior to that of hosts Malaysia, so a tie on points would put Malaysia ahead. Malaysia needed a victory or a draw to take the second spot in the group, but a victory in the last outing would have lifted the Koreans to the second place in the standings, pushing Malaysia down to the third spot and Pakistan to the fourth.

5 mins to go in the second quarter and the match looks balanced for the first time now. The constant attacks from the Indians seem to have mellowed down and the Koreans are having longer periods of possession. The overall tempo of the game itself has come down.

Second half kicks off with both sides level. The first half has been a reflection of how the teams have played in this tournament.India have been aggressive while South Korea have waited for their chances to come and defended otherwise.

It has been a more mellow third quarter thus far, as compared to the frantic pace of the first half. India are still doing most of the attacking but seem to hold back a little now that Korea have shown their clinical nature. Its hard to see which side could go forward at this point.
