India achieved their best ever FIFA rankings when they lose to the 96th spot in the latest rankings released on Thursday. Sports Minister Vijay Goel congratulated the football team for the achievement and asked them to stay focussed.
India, currently 96th in the world rankings, rose to their best rank in last two decades and are currently 12th in the AFC rankings. Goel said that we are going through a golden period.
“We are going through a golden period of football and the best is yet to come. The present FIFA spot doesn’t mean that we have achieved much. We need to stay focused on the upcoming challenges,” Goel said.
India will be hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup in October this year and Goel said that it will make India “the next bright spot in international football.”
Lauding his ministry, he said that youngsters should take up sports and his department is committed to help and provide facilities to everyone.
India’s best-ever FIFA ranking till date stays 94, which was attained in February 1996, while 99 was India’s second-best, achieved in November 1993.
In the last two years, India have risen 77 spot to be under 100 and have played some good football. It has now won 13 of its last 15 matches and is unbeaten in the last eight games.
