FC Pune City began their home run in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2016 on Wednesday with NorthEast United the first of the visitors to Western part of the country. And that run didn’t get off to the best of starts with NEUFC winning the contest with a solitary goal in the 79th minute. The win took NEUFC to the top of the table with 9 points from 4 matches.

After a cagey first half and an equally well contested 34 minutes in the second part, Emiliano Alfaro used little space in the box to get a shot on that crept past the keeper. The game also saw two red cards – Nirmal Chhetri for NEUFC and Eduardo for Pune.

Pune continue their home stretch by playing Kerala Blasters (October 17) and Chennaiyin FC (October 23) next.

FC Pune City take on NorthEast United FC, eye maximum points from three-match home run

After bouncing back from an opening loss with an away win in Goa, FC Pune City would look to target maximum points from their next three matches at home, beginning with the game against NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League on Wednesday.
Pune lost to Mumbai City FC 0-1 in their campaign opener at home but bounced back with a 2-1 win over FC Goa at Margao last week to collect their first points in the tournament.
The clash against NorthEast United at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium at Balewadi will be followed by two more home matches — against Kerala Blasters (17 October) and Chennaiyin FC (23 October).
Assistant coach Miguel said that his side would look to collect maximum points from the three home matches.
“We have three games at home and these games are very crucial for us to get nine points which will help us go ahead in the league. We start with NorthEast and we know they are in good form but we are playing at home and with the Goa win, it will increase our confidence to play well,” said Miguel, who will continue to take charge of the side till chief coach Antonio Habas returns after serving a four-match suspension.
FC Pune City needed a dramatic 90th minute winner against FC Goa to collect full points from their first win. The performance was encouraging, and with marquee Mohamed Sissoko stamping his authority on debut alongside Jonatan Lucca in midfield, there was all-round appreciation.
“It was the first game they played together. They can do better but they performed really well as they understand each other,” said Miguel.
NorthEast United are at the top of the table for now with six points from three matches. But they were grounded by Mumbai City FC after two consecutive wins at home and coach Nelo Vingada will have to do a lot more to ensure that his side does not remain giants only at home.
“I am proud of the players even though we made some mistakes, missed a couple of chances. But this is football, these mistakes happen because we play with men and not with robots and machines. I am leaving with this performance and not the result. I am leaving Mumbai more optimistic than I was even before we lost,” the Portuguese coach said after his team lost by a solitary goal, thanks to a penalty from Diego Forlan.
NorthEast United FC had their chances to get at least a point from the game but missed far too many chances against Mumbai. If they want more than a point in their next away match, they will have make amends and convert the chances.

Nearly 15 minutes into the contest and no big chances for either teams. Plenty of dangerous crosses but neither able to make the most of the attacking threat while goalkeepers make merry.

Half an hour gone. There is a lot of action in the middle of the pitch but no headway into the final third with keepers being tested. Stays 0-0 and 10 minutes left in the first half

RED CARD! That’s harsh by the referee. Nirmal Chhetri with a lunging tackle and it brings down Anibal Zurdo. NorthEast United are down to 10 men!

A minute added on in the first half and there is no headway in the contest. Stays 0-0 between FC Pune City and NorthEast United. No real chances for either side but Nirmal Chhetri – for NEUFC – has been sent off.

Back underway at the Shiv Chhatrapti Sports Complex in Pune. The first half was a cagey affair. By the look of it, this game needs individual brilliance to make the difference

CHANGES: Pune make a change at the break with Arata Izumi coming in place of Gouramangi Singh Moirangthem. And now at the stroke of the hour mark, Rodrigues goes off and Sanju Pradhan. For NEUFC, Narzary is making way for Reagan Singh

69′ Jonatan Lucca tries to curl it into the right bottom corner but it is held on to by the NEUFC keeper.

RED CARD! Eduardo of Pune City is sent off for a second booking. It is 10-men apiece now.

GOAL!! NorthEast United break the deadlock and it is Emiliano Alfaro who is on the mark. Holds on to his marker and gets a left-footed shot in to beat Apoula Edima Edel Bete. Shade of luck in that but it all counts – especially in a cagey contest such as this.

86′ Nico Velez is played through on goal and gets his shot on target on the first time but is saved by Bete to keep Pune in this.

CHANGE: The goalscorer Emiliano Alfaro is replaced by Wellington Priori.

Four minutes added on and this is getting dirty. Clear time wasting tactics by NorthEast United players – dropping to the ground on little contact.
