Davide Succi’s thunderous volley was something that NorthEast could never come back from. The home side did attack but Chennaiyin’s defence, led by Bernard Mendy, was more than up for the task. Chennaiyin now

Chennaiyin now seem to be on a good run. After a rather slow start in which they were held to a 1-1 draw against Atletico de Kolkata and then slipped to a 1-3 defeat at home against Delhi Dynamos, Chennaiyin defeated the beleaguered FC Goa 2-0 and have now followed it up with a rather unexpected victory at NorthEast United’s stomping ground.

For NorthEast its back to the drawing  board and there may not be any alarm bells ringing yet, manager Nelo Vingada will be hoping that they don’t throw off the good start they have got with performances like these.

The return of Bernard Mendy is certainly a boost for Chennaiyin FC but this undoubtedly one of their biggest challenges of the season. Despite their last match being a 1-1 draw, NorthEast have proven that they are the team to beat this season.

Chennaiyin FC will have pleasant memories about last season when they won the title but they will hope to forget their visit to Guwahati in a hurry. It all ended in disaster for Marco Materazzi’s side last season when Harmanjyot Khabra was sent off, players were involved in skirmishes and they lost 0-2.

Even in the first year, NorthEast stunned Chennaiyin FC, then leading the table, with a flurry of goals in the first session.

Materazzi will hope to change his away record in Guwahati and having won against FC Goa, will not be short on confidence.

Chennaiyin FC registered their first win this season after putting it across FC Goa 2-0 in an early repeat of last year’s final. Goals from Hans Mulder and Mehrajuddin Wadoo in the first half were enough to collect full points after a draw against Atletico de Kolkata and loss against Delhi Dynamos.

“We came in with a whole new mentality and what I told my players is that if we put the heart in, the will, the hunger, then we can win. If not then we are not the same team and we can be at the bottom of the table,” said Materazzi.

Chennaiyin FC are placed sixth at the moment with four points from three matches.

20′ gone, NorthEast United 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

A couple of almost moments there for Chennaiyin FC. They were helped to A great extent by the slack defence that has helped them make those moves. There was also a bit of a peek into what happened when Chennaiyin travelled to Guwahati last season when Didier Zokora and Davide Succi got into a bit of a scuffle.

30′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin FC were unable to convert a rebound from ma viciously struck free kick that Subrata Paul could only punch back into action. The visitors habe made more attacking moves thus far. On the other side, a good round of passing had givern NorthEast winger Velez some space to run. It was quicklty closed down by the Chennaiyin defence. 40′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

North East have been forced to make a first half substitution after Nicolas Velez looked to be in discomfort. As we approach half-time, both teams have failed to find the back of the net. Subrata Paul seems to be having a better time between goals than what he did against Delhi Dynamos.

HALF-TIME!! NorthEast United 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

It’s another goalless first half at the Hero ISL. While chances have been har dot come by, Marco Materazzi’s team had the bulk of them and he is certainly going to have a few words about it with his players. Nicolas Velez has been instrumental for NorthEast United and they would be hoping that his inujury is not too severe. The referee certainly has his hands full with these two sides and will be hoping for a less eventfull second half discipline-wise.

GOAL (48′ Succi) NorthEast United 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

A thunderous volley by Chennaiyin striker Davide Succi when the ball was lobbed into the box. The shot was on target and the goalkeeper did get a hand to it but it slipped through his fingers and went into goal. Chennaiyin have been the more aggressive side throughout the match and seems to have finally reaped the reward for it.

Chennaiyin had a chance of extending the lead here as the referee penalised a challenge by Wellington right outside the box. Maurizio Peluso took the kick and struck it high. For now it seems NorthEast might slip into their player first defeat of the season

75′ gone NorthEast United 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

Butterfingers from Subrata Paul once again when a shot directed straight at him from midfield bounced off his hands. It was a venomous shot but one he should have controlled. Fortunately for him, there were no attackers anywhere near the box or else, the joke would have been on the one who failed to score from that gift.

85′ gone NorthEast United 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

The home fans watch on tensely as their side try to battle it through a resolute Chennayin defence. Berard Mendy and co. have been rock solid and seem to be able to ward-off anything and everything that the home side are throwing at them.

FULL TIME!!! NorthEast United 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

Finally, the tied-match chain has been broken. This victory takes Chennaiyin’s points tally to seven points which means that they have leapt up two places to become third on the league table. Davide Succi was congratulated by his team mates for his sensational effort that gave Chennaiyin a rather unexpected victory. The game has also been pretty tense and tempers have flared on quite a few occasions. The referee, hence, deserves some credit for not spoling the game with red cards.
