NorthEast United have finally won a match. In any other league, a win in six matches wouldn’t mean much on the league table but would make a world of a difference for the confidence of a team. Considering how close the ISL is, while the players would feel much better after this match, they also know now that NorthEast are just a point away from the semi-final spots.

Antonio Habas will be very unhappy with his team after seeing a performance like that. FC Pune City never looked like they would score and has ended up losing against a team that didn’t play much better than they did.

Build Up

NorthEast United FC coach Nelo Vingada has not lost faith in his team’s ability despite a run of form that has seen them without a win for the last six matches in Hero Indian Super League.

Draws against Delhi Dynamos and Atletico de Kolkata were the only solace for NorthEast United who have lost four of their last six matches but Vingada is confident they can turn the corner as they come up against an inspired FC Pune City at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, on Tuesday.

NorthEast United FC set the pace in this edition of ISL with two back-to-back victories against Kerala Blasters and FC Goa in their first two matches at home but later lost their next three matches infront of their home fans. They have two more games remaining at home and Vingada has no doubt they can upset calculations and qualify for semi-finals.

“The most important thing is that NorthEast are still alive. We can play and beat any team. There is no doubt about that and the best thing is that NorthEast are coming back and I am very happy with the performance of the players. I still believe that we have a chance,” said Vingada.

NorthEast United are currently placed seventh with 11 points from 10 matches, the same as bottom-placed FC Goa who have played an additional match. However, the teams are so close to each other that a win will take them close to qualification.

“If we can play this way, we can score the goals and you know better than me that last year Chennaiyin were almost out but played well in the last four games. Even Goa can play well and qualify,” said Vingada, whose team lost to FC Goa and drew against Atletico de Kolkata after either dominating or leading till the final minute of play.

NorthEast United will be up against an inspired FC Pune City who dethroned Delhi Dynamos, largely acknowledged as the best team in the league at the moment.

FC Pune City scored an astonishing 4-3 victory over Delhi Dynamos to climb to fourth spot with 15 points from 11 matches and coach Antonio Habas believes the victory will help them navigate a tough run of away matches against NorthEast United, Kerala Blasters and Atletico de Kolkata.

“We are only thinking about NorthEast right now. We have a huge travel coming up for us and very soon, we will have to focus on recovering. We aren’t thinking about the semi-finals, so we will focus on NorthEast and prepare accordingly,” said Habas.

Despite striking form after winning two of their last three matches, Habas is taking nothing for granted.

“You saw two games back we were out of contention but now we are playing well again and we are back on track. We need to remain in the top four. We have to maintain balance to achieve the result. Let’s see on December 2, what’s our position,” said Habas.

8′ gone NorthEast 0-0 Pune
The game hasn’t picked up much pace and both keepers are yet to be tested. The two teams have been poor and a lot of poor passes have gone through. Even the simplest pf passes are looking misplaced.

10′ gone, Emiliano Alfaro had the first real chance of the amtch. It was a low free kick and it hit the wall as it went out. The ball ended up hitting the side netting and went out for a corner. The wall broke up as they jumped to defend the kick, something that doesn’t happen usualy. Quality has been missing from the game so far.

12′ gone, And that was a little better from the away side. Ndoye dribbled all the way into the box and took the shot. It was from a tight angle but made the keeper work and the ball went out for a corner.

20′ gone NorthEast 0-0 Pune

The players seem to be trying to do a little too much instead of sticking to the basics. Both sides have taken shots, most of which have gone wide off target. The latest was from NorthEast’s Romaric, who latched on to a ball from the edge of the box that soared above the goal

rohitmundayurie November 22, 20167:28 pm

25′ gone NorthEast 0-0 Pune

It was a very good corner that came at the right pace and height. The marking was not great and so was the attack. The man closest to the ball turned out to be Eduardo who jumped too high and could not get his head down in time.

28′ gone, Ndoye seems to have a hamstring problem and Pune are forced into an early change. Ndoye has walked off the pitch for Oberman.

rohitmundayurie November 22, 20167:36 pm

35′ gone Nothing much has happened in the last 10 minutes of the match. One may say that Pune has a slightly better possession but in reality, both teams haven’t been able to get any form into their game and are kicking the ball about, hoping for a chance to come up. NorthEast have been the team attacking morte often but all of them have fizzled out in the final third, largely because of their own poor shot selection.

40′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 FC Pune City

It is one of those matches where the managers will be happy that their teams haven’t conceded. Nelo Vingada and Antonio Habas will have a lot to say to their teams as both sets of players have been so poor that the game hasn’t picked up any pace. The team defending has opened up too easy and the team that is attacking has been poor while taking up the chances.

44′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 FC Pune City

Romaric was yellow carded for a hand on an opponent’s face. Opposition coach Habas said something that set off the NorthEast player and he was incnecned and went to have a few words with him. It was a risky move to make considering he was only just been yellow carded.

HALF TIME!! NorthEast united 0-0 FC Pune City

All hell broke lose just before half time. It all seems to have started with a challenge on Alfaro and then, Sissokho pushed and pinned a player to the ground in between the ruckus. Not sure if the referee saw that as the FC Pune City marquee player only got a yellow for that. Somehow the referee broke everything up and gace three yellow cards as he blew for half time. Judging by what could be seem, the fight seems to have continued into the tunnel.

Other than a riot amongs the fans, this match has shown us almost everything that could be wrong with football. After such chaos just before half time, let us see if things will improve in the second half.

50′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 Pune

The tension seems to have been quelled as there has been no incidents so far. The referee had a word with both Sissokho and Zoora before the start of the second half.

55′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 FC Pune City

Lots of dramatization in this match. Obertan went down and it seems the follow through from the challenge was what got him. He rolled over a few times and slapped the ground in apparent agony. The referee didn’t give anything and he gets up and runs as if nothing happened.

63′ gone NorthEast United 0-0 FC Pune City

Katsumi Yusa took a shot from a ball provided by Velez and Bete made the save. It was the first time either of the goalkeepers was challenged in this half. Alfaro then went clear of the Pune City player but he also ended up taking too tight an angle on goal and hit it straight to Bete.

67′ gone NorthEast Unites 0-0 FC Pune City

Lenny Rodrigues took the shot from near the touchline in the midfield area. It was a venomous hit and caught Subrata Paul off guard. The goalkeeper couldn’t get to it but the ball hit the post and went out. The first big chance of the match for FC Pune City.

Oberman latched on to a ball that was brough down by a team mate with a volley. Subrata Paul made a sensational save. That has to be one of the defining moments of the match. The players seem to be connecting better with the full time whistle looming large/

This was the madness that ensued just before half time:

GOAL!! NorthEast United 1-0 FC Pune City (Romaric 81′)

It never looked like this would happen but it has. Eduardo was penalized for a hand ball and the free kick was taken by Romaric. The Ivorian took the kick and smashed into the goal. It was a freekick from nearly 30 yards out and it was perfectly placed.

rohitmundayurie November 22, 20168:48 pm

The crowd seems to have woken up with that goal and are making a lot of noise every time NorthEast have the ball. Pune don’t really look like they can come back from this, but, it never looked like any of these two sides would score today either.

rohitmundayurie November 22, 20168:54 pm

Here is the goal:

rohitmundayurie November 22, 20169:00 pm

FULL TIME!! NorthEast United 1-0 FC Pune City

Alfaro took his own sweet time to walk out of the field when he was subbed off and that let the referee add a few seconds more to the five minutes extra added. It was certainly a match that FC Pune City won’t look back at with pride. NorthEast may have recorded their first win in six matches but know that they would have been punished by a better opposition cfonsidering how cheaply they were giving the ball away. In the end, if there is a word that could describe the match before the goal, it was ‘boring.’ You have to feel for the players thouhg, the matches are coming thick and fast and they aren’t getting too much rest time before travelling to a venue for a game.
