Mumbai City FC and Atletico de Kolkata remained unbeaten in the third edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) but the home side’s winning run was stopped with a 1-1 draw thanks to an 82nd minute equaliser by Javi Lara.

Matias Defederico had given Mumbai the lead in the first half after he unleashed a shot from distance and the left footed shot crept into the corner. Mumbai had more chances to extend the gap but were denied by the crossbar or poor finishing.

In the second half, Mumbai sat back and absorbed pressure but after being reduced to ten men, ATK grew larger in the attack and made good in the 82nd minute with a Lara effort. The ATK player took a shot from distance and that took a wicked deflection to fly into the top corner.

Build Up
Atletico de Kolkata out to halt Mumbai City’s winning run

Mumbai City FC’s winning run in the Indian Super League will be seriously challenged by former champions Atletico de Kolkata in an interesting third round clash at Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday.

Mumbai City FC won their first two matches without conceding a goal, and although both victories were achieved by a single goal, coach Alexandre Guimaraes should be pleased with the clean sheets. Atletico de Kolkata are also unbeaten. Having drawn the opening game against Chennaiyin FC, the former champions bounced back in style to put it across Kerala Blasters.

“We are all quite pleased with the start to the season. It’s a totally different feeling that the team and fans have. The echo from the other teams is also different; they are thinking this is going to be a different season for Mumbai City. It’s good but we know that we have just started. In such a league, you have to stay alert. There is not much time to celebrate or cry. You have to be competitive always,” said the Costa Rican coach who has made fans believe in the team again.

There will not be any easy games in the ISL as the difference between all teams is minimal. With two victories under his belt, Guimaraes will be bristling with confidence but knows that Atletico de Kolkata will provide them with the toughest challenge.

The visitors were full of praise for the league’s pace-setters with coach Jose Molina insisting that the clash between the two teams with similar playing styles should be an interesting one. “We know we are here to play against a strong team. They played two matches, won both, six points and two clean sheets. That’s a very good beginning for Mumbai. We want to play our game (against Mumbai). We have similar styles and it will be an interesting match,” said Molina.

Mumbai City marquee Diego Forlan played crucial role in both wins for his team. The former Uruguay striker and Mumbai City marquee created the only goal of the match in their opening clash against FC Pune City and then scored a second-half penalty in the next clash against NorthEast United. Atletico de Kolkata, however, have not drawn up any special plans for the star striker. “There is no special plan (for Diego Forlan). I don’t like to focus on one player. I think they have good players in attack, midfield and defence. I like my team defending as a team, together, and against a team, not one or two players. We know how to defend,” said Molina.

Mumbai City FC shares top position on the points table along with NorthEast United at 6 points each. On other hand ATK and Delhi Dynamos are at 4 points each in second position on points table. A victory for either of the team – Mumbai City or ATK – will take them to the top of the table.

Early chances and flurry from the homeside. Leo Costa has a go but his effort goes flying over the bar. Promising stuff from Mumbai. Explains why these two teams have produced 16 goals in their four contests in ISL

6′ Iain Hume with a dink at the far post for Sameehg Doutie but his effort is well challenged by the Mumbai defence and goes straight into Roberto Volpato Netto’s hands. Good positive start to the contest

Boithang Haokip is put through on goal and the keeper comes out to defend what would have been a one-on-one chance. Hints of a trip on the Mumbai player but the referee waves play on. If that was given as a foul, it would have been a red card and a free kick outside the box for Mumbai. But, nothing. Tough decision though!

Boithang Haokip once again into the thick of things. Does well to stay onside on a long ball and lashes a fierce left-footed shot but it hits the upright and comes off. The rebound falls to a fellow Blue shirt but it is squandered. Mumbai City FC starting to grow into this. But after 13 minutes, it stands 0-0

First yellow card of the evening. Aiborlang Khongjee is booked for going in with both feet and catching an Atletico player late. That looked nasty.

GOAL! Matías Defederico gives Mumbai a deserved lead in the contest. Takes a left footed shot from outside the box and it goes into the corner of the goal. Mumbai lead Atletico 1-0 in the 28th minute

We’re past the 40 minute mark and Atletico are making small strides into the Mumbai box but not doing enough to test the goalkeeper. Stays 1-0 to Mumbai

HALF TIME: Mumbai City FC 1-0 Atletico de Kolkata Defedrico goal the difference maker at the break between the two sides. Mumbai have had multiple chances to be up by a bigger margin but between referee decisions and crossbars, things haven’t worked out for them. ATK started the better of the two but didn’t do enough to test the keeper.

KICK OFF! Second half begins and it is Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) who restart proceedings in this game. They’re hoping to keep their unbeaten run going but face a difficult task if the first half is any impression.

CHANGES FOR ATK: Bikramjit Singh has been replaced by Ruidas. And, Iain Hume has gone off for Stephen Pearson

We’re approaching the hour mark and the second half hasn’t seen the flow and attacking intent that the first one did. ATK trying to make an impression but Mumbai staying strong and defiant with their backline

CHANCE! Sameehg Doutie has a shot going over from a yard or two out. It was fizzed in from inside the box by Borja but Doutie almost knees it onto the ground and it goes over the bar. That was a good chance for ATK to equalise

CHANGE FOR MUMBAI: Sony Norde is back on and he replaces Leo Costa.

Tanuj Lakhina October 11, 20168:32 pm

RED CARD! Pronay Halder gets a second booking for a late challenge on Borja and that’s a deserved card. Things get tough for Mumbai now. Lead 1-0 and reduced to 10-men.

10 minutes for ATK to get back into things now. Pritam goes out and Didika comes in as the final swap of pieces

GOAL! Javi Lara with a beautiful shot to equalise for ATK in the 83rd minute. Creates a yard for himself and a defensive leg gets a massive ricochet to loop into the corner of the goal. And it is 1-1!

Two minutes to go in this contest and Atletico de Kolkata are on the up as things stand. The momentum clearly with them.
