Michael Chopra’s solitary goal was enough for Kerala Blasters to clinch their first victory of the season. Mumbai City FC were sloppy in defence and the result could have been far worse had Kerala not squandered their opportunities in the first half.

Steve Coppell will be happy with the way his team played after going ahead. Mumbai, on the other hand, will look to improve themselves in their next match. While they can say that Diego Forlan’s absence may have affected the team, it was clear from the match that the lack of communication between the players will prove to be costly for them in the coming matches.

While Kerala Blasters may seem to have more problems than Mumbai City FC at the moment considering their respective positions on the table, it is still too early rule them out completely from this year’s tournament. A win here would give Kerala the momentum they need for the rest of their fixtures. Their central-defence of Cedric Hengbart is starting in the match along with Aaron Hughes, who returns after fulfilling international duties with Northern Ireland.

On the other hand, Mumbai City FC are without the talismanic Diego Forlan. Goalkeeper Bolpato is wearing the captain’s armband in his place while Boithang Haokip replaces Forlan at the centre-forward position.

Kerala Blasters have just a point from their first three matches and is the only team in the league to have not scored as yet, despite backing from approximately 55,000 supporters for each home game. Coppell said his players are trying hard and a change in fortunes could be just around the corner.

Mumbai City FC have made an encouraging start to their league campaign this season. Yet unbeaten, Mumbai City have seven points from their first three matches and even though coach Guimaraes said he was targeting “nine points” from the first three matches, he has plenty to be happy about.

10′ Kerala Blasters 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Almost a costly mistake made by the Mumbai City defender in the 5th minute when he made a meek headed pass to the goalkeeper. Mohammad Rafi made a run and made an acrobatic attempt at goa but the ball landed safely in the keeper’s hands before he could touch it. Rafi ended up injuring his hand and had to be off the field for a few seconds.

20′ gone Kerala Blasters 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Kerala Blasters have started in a positive manner. They have held more possession and have been the team doing the bulk of attacking. If they can keep up this pressure and if Michael Chopra manages to stay onside in the final third, Mumbai do have a problem in their hands.

30′ gone Kerala Blasters 0-0 Mumbai City FC

The home side are pretty much running circles around Mumbai but they are completely breaking down at the business end of the pitch. Kerala certainly have a much bigger share of possession but they haven’t been able to do much with it. There have been very few times when an attack has fizzled out because of the opposition’ defence and mostly, it has been Kerala squandering a good build up. Still, this is a very positive start from the home side and Mumbai need to find a way to hold on to the ball.

HALF TIME!! Kerala Blasters 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Chances have been hard to come by for both teams, Mumbai more so than Kerala. Kerala had a few very good opportunities just before the end of the first half with Michael Chopra and Pratik Chaudhari missing the goal by the smallest of margins but they will know that they have to be more clinical in attack. Mumbai have lots of firepower and they will punish Kerala if they aren’t able to convert their chances.

GOAL!! Kerala Blasters 1-0 Mumbai City FC (Chopra 57′)

All the possession seems to have paid off and Michael Chopra finally finds the target for Kerala. It was a good move and the Mumbai defence were caught sleeping when the ball came to Chopra who made no mistake this time. 70′ gone Kerala Blasters 1-0 Mumbai City FC

Mumbai have to go for the kill now and that is what they are doing with Alexandre Guimaraes taking off centre back Lucian Goian and bringing winger Sony Norde. Unlike the first-half, there have been lots of stoppages in this one and that will certainly make a deifference at the end of the 90. Norde’s substitution, though, almost proved to be an inspired one when he charged down the left flank and almost found the back of the net.

80′ gone Kerala Blasters 1-0 Mumbai City FC

Michael Chopra kisses the badge as he walks off the pitch as the stadium applauds the goalscorer. It seems Kerala might just collect the three points in the match with the Mumbai players looking more tired with each passing minutes. Its still not too late in the match but Kerala have reiterated that they are one of the toughest sides to play at home in the ISL.
