Chennaiyin FC manager Marco Materazzi and the referee would both be very unhappy when they see replays of this match. Neither the referee, nor the linesmen spotted Ravanan’s vicious stamp on Dudu and the entire incident went without any card or foul.

Chennnaiyin were the better team throughout the match but they never took advantage of the situation. In the end, a clinical free kick from Anibal took the full three points away from them. FC Pune are still without a win at home this season.

Build Up

FC Pune City will be pleased to have chief coach Antonio Habas in the dugout for their home clash against Chennaiyin FC on Sunday but still need to figure out how to avoid their worst start to a Hero Indian Super League campaign since inception.

Pune have always had a good start to their campaign while playing at home. In the first year, they won two of the first three matches at home and repeated the feat last season as well. But this time around, they have been caught on the back foot. Pune have picked up just a point from their first three matches at home and it will be something that coach Habas needs to address at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium, Balewadi-Pune on Sunday.

Even their solitary victory in this year’s campaign came from a last-minute winner against FC Goa at Nehru Stadium in Goa last week.

“We are on the way to improving. At least we didn’t lose, we drew (against Kerala Blasters). I think we played much better and we deserved to win. We will improve and we will work harder for our next game,” said assistant coach Miguel, who will now hand over charge to Habas who returns after serving a four-match suspension.

It will not be easy for the hosts against Chennaiyin FC. Previous records show that the defending champions have never lost against FC Pune City, winning three out of the four matches. The other clash ended with both teams sharing the spoils.

Worse for FC Pune City, their rivals have struck form after a disjointed start. They have picked up two convincing victories in a row against FC Goa and NorthEast United FC, and if they managed to pick up full points against FC Pune City, they will become the first team to win three matches in a row in this edition of the ISL.

“What makes the difference between winning and losing is the mentality. After the Delhi game (which we lost) we knew that our performance was bad and we changed our attitude and here is the result,” said Chennaiyin FC coach Marco Materazzi.

Not everything, however, has gone according to plan for Materazzi. His best Indian striker, Jeje Lalpekhlua, is far from the high standards he set last year, scoring six goals and three assists. This year, he has drawn a blank but given his past record against Pune – he has scored twice, including the winner when the two teams last met – Materazzi will be tempted to keep the faith in Jeje.

A win for Chennaiyin FC can take them to the top of the table, while Pune City will hope to jump to the top four and their nightmare at home will soon be forgotten.

Here are the starting XIs:

Chennaiyin FC wearing their away white jerseys and FC Pune City wearing their home colours. They haven’t won a single match wearing those colours at this stadium. Pune is not particularly known for turning up in numbers for their matches but that is not the case today. The stadium is packed and they are making a lot of noise for their team. Lets see of those on the pitch can reciprocate the spirit in the stands.

10′ gone FC Pune City 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

Traore makes a great header and finds the back of the net. It was a clinical header but the referee blew for offside on Jonatah Luca, the man who provided the cross that lead to the dissallowed goal.
Just the next minute, Riise took a free kick on other side and whipped the ball into the box. The ball came back to him and he took it onto his left foot to drive it in. The ball ended up with Dudu but he was declared offside after the ball was in the goal.

20′ gone Fc Pune City 0-0 CHennaiyin FC

Chances have been hard to come by but the same can’t be said about yellow cards or fouls. The referee has already distributed more than two yellow cards in the match and it seems there might be more to come with tackles flying about.

GOAL!! FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC (jeje 27′)

Thats a contendor for the goal of the season. Jeje got the ball well outside the box. He wrestled to gain control of the ball and then attempted an audacious lofted shot. The Pune goalkeeper was off his line, he jumped but the ball soared over his hands and into the box. Chennaiyin’s Indian talent on display once again.

40′ gone, FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

Sissoko got the ball towards in the penalty box. He then gave it an almighty swing with his left foot and the ball just went far away from the Chennaiyin goal. It was a tired finish, which is pretty strange as we are not even at the halfway point in the match. FC Pune have otherwise been unable to build a decisive attack and striker Traore is looking isolated.

Half Time FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

The half has ended and there seems to be no way for FC Pune City to improve their home record in the season. It is clear that Chennaiyin are happy with the one goal advantage that they have as they ahev ever since sat back and frustrated FC Pune. Marco Materazzi had said before the match that he was inpressed with the Indian talent in his side and Jeje’s stunner only backs that statement

60′ gone FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

It’s the same story as in almost every ISL match this season. FC Pune City are trying to piece attacks together and whenever they do, it is the end product that is lacking quality with players going for spectacular and audacious shots. Hence, the score remains the same.

rohitmundayurie October 23, 20168:29 pm

70′ gone FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

FC Pune are pressing high as they should be but Chennaiyin are clearly up for the task. Their attacks are coming to nothing and it doesn’t look like Pune has any answers to the defensive riddles that Chennaiyin have posed.

80′ gone FC Pune City 0-1 Chennaiyin FC

Dharmaraj Ravanan gets fouled in his own box by Dudu. However after Dudu gets on ground, Dharmaraj Ravanan stamps on his shins deliberately. The referee fails to spot it as he is following the ball. That was definitely a sent off had the referee spotted it. Ravanan is a lucky guy to stay on the pitch.

GOAL! FC Pune City 1-1 Chennaiyin FC (82′ Anibal)

Pune were not able to pierce the Chennaiyin defence through normal play and hence, a set piece chance was oe that needed to be converted. Anibal took the free kick that was a fair way outside the box. It hit the near piost and went in. Pune are back in it.

Full Time!! FC Pune City 1-1 Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin will consider this as two points dropped. Pune City were looking disorganised when they conceded for the first time and that was the time when Chennaiyin should have pushed forward to get more goals but they decided to drop back and defend. That is always a risky route to take and in the end, Anibal’s free kick prevented them from going top of the table.

FC Pune City may be happy that they have not lost another match at home but they will need to take a serious look at their tactics if they are hoping to make it to the play offs.
