FC Pune City have clinched their first home victory and only their second win of the season. It didn’t look like this would be the case in the first half though, with ATK doing more of the attacking. The match was a feisty affair with players clashing now and then and as many as nine yellow cards and two penalties being given by the referee.

Atletico de Kolkata had a chance to go top of the table with this one but they remain third and Mumbai City’s position at the top is intact. FC Pune City have risen from the bottom and are now sixth.

Build Up

Antonio Habas will have to keep his emotions under check as FC Pune City host former champions Atletico de Kolkata in a Hero Indian Super League clash at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium, Balewadi-Pune, on Sunday.

Habas guided Atletico de Kolkata to the ISL title in 2014 and then ensured the team made it to the semi-finals last season, losing a fierce contest against eventual champions Chennaiyin FC.

This season Habas decided to move over to FC Pune City but things have not really gone the way he would have liked. Serving a four match suspension at the start, Habas saw his team win just four points from the first four matches and since his return to the technical bench for the last three matches, Pune City picked up only two points.

“The team is working hard. They tried to score but they failed but they fought to the last minute. That’s a good thing. Always the same problem though for us.” Habas said after his team were pushed to the bottom following their solitary goal loss against FC Goa.

With a match in hand, Pune City can jump to the sixth position above FC Goa and Kerala Blasters if they defeat Atletico de Kolkata. However, given Pune’s poor run at home and ATK’s strong showing this season, the visitors should start as favourites.

Atletico de Kolkata have 12 points from seven matches and will occupy the top spot with a win in Pune. Coach Jose Molina, who replaced Habas at the start of the season, has helped the team dish out some fine performances and the return of marquee player Helder Postiga has boosted ATK’s confidence.

After an injury-forced absence of four matches, Postiga scored his first goal through a delightful header to script a spectacular comeback win against NorthEast United FC.

Interestingly, Postiga was chosen as a marquee player by Habas last season but he could only play the opening match where he scored two goals and limped out with an injury. Will Postiga now return to haunt Habas?

“The most important thing is to rest well and then put in a good effort in training and it is going to be a good game. This league is very competitive and Pune is a good team. I know how Antonio (Habas) thinks but it is a tough game for us,” said Postiga.

Atletico de Kolkata have retained the maximum number of international players for this season. Habas knows all of them quite well and it will be interesting to see how he sets up his team to thwart the visitors and plot Pune’s resurgence.

Here are the Starting XIs:

10′ gone FC Pune City 0-0 Atletico De Kolkata

Helder Postiga almost scored what would have certainly been the goal of the season. He received the ball in midfield and ran forward into space. He was still a fair distance away from goal and the ball curled away to scrape the side netting. Quite an attempt that. Ian Hume was taken down by a crunching challenge and hence got a freekick.

Traore rose to head a ball in from a corner kick that hit Eduardo on the body and Habas as screaming from the touch line for hand ball. A corner on the other end was taken short, Doutie passed it to Kotal. He then swung at the ball aiming at goodness knows what and hit the ball clear of his teammates and opposition players and the ball almost went for a throw in. It left almost everyon on the pitch bewildered.

30′ gone FC Pune City 0-0 ATK

Jonathan Luca tried to curl the ball from distance and missed it by a foot. Other than this and Postiga’s earlier shot and a few deft toucghes from Hume, the game has been filled with theatrics so far and quality has been at a premium. Traore went down clutching his nose after high foot. There was absolutely no contact and still the Pune striker went down clutching his nose. Pune and ATK have been dependant on hopefull balls into the opposition half. So far, Hume and Postiga have been able to control them well so far while only Luca has shown some quality.

Eduardo tried to win the ball and battled with Postiga. In the process, he crashed on the head of Postiga and went down, seemingly losing his consciousness. Ambulance was kept ready but Eduardo got up with a big swelling on his face. He decides to play out the first half with a bandage on the affected area.

GOAL! FC Pune City 1-0 ATK (Eduardo 40′)

Wow, he looked set for the ambulance just a couple of minutes and now he is celebrating a goal. Full credit to Eduardo, he chose to play out the first half and has done the most.

HALF TIME!! FC Pune City 1-0 ATK

Eduardo went down a few minutes after the goal and this time he could not get back up. He was stretchered off the field to the Ambulance waiting at the touch line. But he has made the difference and have given FC Pune City something to defend while he is gone.

GOAL!! FC Pune City 2-0 ATK (Anibal 55′ pen.)

FC Pune City demanded a penalty and they got it. It looked like a harsh one to give but a hand ball it was. Anibal stepped up to take the kick. His shot hit the goalkeeper on its way in. Pune in dreamland, ATK players with their hands over their heads.

rohitmundayurie November 6, 20168:25 pm

65′ gone, FC Pune City 2-0 ATK
ATK goalkeeper gave the ball straight back to Pune’s Lenny who swung at the ball. He was a long way put from goal and tried to find the empty net and ended shooting it wide. Who would have thought that this would be the case in the second half. In the first 20 minutes FC Pune City were doing nothing more than put up hopefull balls, fly into tackles and complaint to the referee. ATK are still controlling possession but Pune are looking extremely cnfident on the ball.

GOAL! FC Pune City 2-1 ATK

Referee pointed to the spot and this time it was ATK who takes benefit of the spot kick. The man with the whistle sensed that Sissoko had pushed Postiga and gave the penalty. It was a loose one to give. Hume took the shot, Bete saved it first time but the ball came right back to foot of Hume who scored. ATK right back in it.

80′ gone, FC Pune City 2-1 ATK

It is almost exclusively Kolkata at the moment. Pune have tried to put together an attack and have finally got a free kick from almost thirty yards out. Hanibal tries to hit it direct but it hands up in the goalkeeper’s hands. Pune are just about holding on and a goal here would have done them a world of good.

rohitmundayurie November 6, 20168:53 pm

90’gone FC Pune City 2-1 ATK

There are four minutes of added time. ATK had a free kick that required a good delivery. Javi Lara couldn’t do so and the resultant corner could not do produce a goal either. ATK putting all kinds of pressure.

rohitmundayurie November 6, 20168:56 pm

FULL TIME!! FC Pune City 2-1 Atletico de Kolkata

And that’s that! FC Pune City were kept on the ropes until the very end by Atletico de Kolkata but somehow, they held on. Iain Hume’s goalm in the 69th minute gave Kolkata a glimmer of hope and they did pounce on the chance. But Pune kept absorbing the attacks and the end, they came out on top. their first home victory of the season.
