In an otherwise dull contest, Mumbai City FC beat Pune 1-0 in their Indian Super League 2016 opener in Pune on Monday. Mumbai, traditionally poor tourists, got their campaign off to winning start away from home. Both sides remained 0-0 at half-time and Matías Defederico broke the deadlock when he found the back of the net for Mumbai in the 69th minute. Pune had a couple of counter-attacks but failed to convert any. Still early days in the tournament but Mumbai will take the away win with arms wide open. Here’s how the action unfolded during the ‘Maha Derby’ of the Indian Super League.

That’s the final whistle! Mumbai beat Pune 1-0

Pune had their chances, promised with counter-attacks but lacked the finishing touch. It wasn’t a gripping contest and the only moment in the game when Defederico scored the first, and only, goal of the match. With the win, Mumbai open their ISL 2016 account

Pune with the quick counter-attack, a searching through ball but the danger is dealt brilliantly by the goalie who deflects it away for a corner. Meanwhile, Defederico, the goal scorer for Mumbai, is off the field

GOAL! Mumbai open the scoring as Matías Defederico fires one in to make it 1-0 in the 69th minute. His clinical low strike from the left foot found the back of the net, and triggered celebrations in the stand. The Kapoor clan was ecstatic after Defederico put the team on the board

Turn, cross but safely dealt by the Mumbai defender near the back post. Pune did well there to create an opportunity but alert defending keeps the scoreline to 0-0

Pune make a promising start to the second half. Momar Ndoye had an opportunity early in the period but he failed to convert it into the opening goal. We remain 0-0 as the clock enters the 58th minute of play

The two teams are out in the middle for the second half. The scoreline remains locked at 0-0 as the two units start trading possession in search of the first goal of the match

HALF TIME IN PUNE, FC Pune City 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Mumbai had a fantastic chance just before the referee blew the whistle when Diego Forlan whipped a low ball from the left wing. It fell neatly for Krisztian Vadocz and if not for the timely challenge made by the Pune defender, it would certainly have been advantage Mumbai. But the first half has ended all square

30 mins gone FC Pune City 0-0 Mumbai

The visitors are slowly starting to get their organisation better and delving deeper into the Pune half but the home side are looking threatening on the counter. Mumbai’s Pronay Halder has been impressive with a shot from long range that was one of the few things that has troubled the Pune goalkeeper thus far and a deft touch to Forlan in an attacking move.

20th minute FC Pune City 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Mumbai seem to have just calmed down a little bit and seem to be more keen to hold on to the ball with forwards including Forlan playing deep. No chances for both sides since the last update but quite a few tackles flying about.

15th minute FC Pune City 0-0 Mumbai Vity FC

Luca takes the follow up free kcik this time from a better angle. The ball takes a deflection and goes towards goal but the Mumbai goalkeeper holds on. Mumbai then take the ball forward but Pune take it back and got another good goalscoring opportunity. Amazingly, Pune are still level with Mumbai. The home side looking stron now

Jonatta Luca takes the free kick for Pune, the ball hits the wall and, as it turns out the hand of Rui Costa for whcih he gets yellow

10 mins gone FC Pune City 0-0 Mumbai City FC

Can’t really say which team deserves to be ahead so far with both teams making silly mistakes time and again. A lovely play by Pune that created the first chance of the match but it was headed wide by the Pune forward.

Alexandre Guimares is very much there at the Mumbai dugout. He replaces Nicolas Anelka who, despite his status as the marquee signing, could not lead Mumbai to any honours last season.

We have kicked off at the Balewadi stadium as FC Pune City host Mumbai City FC in the first Maharashtra Derby of this ISL season. FC Pune’s coach Antonio Lopez Habas is not on the touchlines due to a ban he carry forward from last season.
