Delhi Dynamos couldn’t have hoped for a better start. They were in the lair of the champions who had put up a fairly good performance in front of a hostile Kolkata crowd against Atletico de Kolkata. Chennaiyin were also looking better than their opponents in the first 20 minutes of the game and it was Delhi’s Santana who was the busier of the two goalkeepers.

But Delhi, to their credit, kept at it, defending stoutly and pouncing onto the opposition half whenever they could and in the end, got the reward to show for it. ISL debutant Marcelinho converted from the spot to score on debut. Dudu scored for Chennaiyin just seconds later and it seemed they might repeat what they did in Kolkata, without conceding again fans would have hoped. But it was not to be and Marcelinho was the man who inflicted the maximum damage once again with a fantastic finish to put the visitors ahead. After that, Delhi dominated the game and when Badara Badji headed in a third for Delhi, it felt like something that was long time coming.

Delhi Dynamos will look to keep up this form when they travel to Kochi to face Kerala Blasters. Chennaiyin, will be hoping for a better performance in their next match against FC Goa.

Approaching full time at the Marina Arena. There us no doubt that Marco Materazzi will have to shake his squad up. There tendency to slip up at vital moments was on display in Kolkata and could be seen here again. If not for a miracle, Chennaiyin is set to end up with one point from their first two matches. Delhi have played a good game here but have been helped a lot by their opponents’ tendency to lose possession at vital junctures.

70 mins gone Chennaiyin FC 1-2 Delhi Dynamos

Delhi Dynamos moving closer to a fantastic start to the season with a victory agains the defending champions. The home side are now chasing the ball with Delhi comfortabl;e in possession. If the score remains like this, it would mean that Chennaiyin would have started this season with just one point from a possible six. Of course, they have always been slow starters, but nothing can be taken for granted.

60 mins gone Chennaiyin FC 1-2 Delhi Dynamos

Chennaiyin having the better share of possession but the Dynamos looking just as dangerous on the counter. The home side are doing a better job of holding onto the ball than they were in the first half. A special mention at this juncture for Bernard Mendy who is almost playing like how Ngolo Kante played for Leicester City last season. He seems to be the last line of defence and the starting point of an attack.

Chennaiyin FC 1-2 Delhi Dynamos

No changes at half-time, Chennaiyin FC gets the second half started. The play didn’t last long as the referee had to stop the play due to a Delhi Dynamos player going down on the ground in some discomfort. Anas Edathodika is the man and he is being guided off the pitch. Kim Kima has come on for the injured player.

HALF-TIME !! Chennaiyin FC 1-2 Delhi Dynamos

It turned out to be quite an exciting first half. In seven minutes, Chennaiyin FC went from going behind to equalising and behind again. Chennaiyin seems to be having difficulty of being able to hold onto advantages this season and it was a very clear that their defence switched-off and that helped Marcelinho greatly in scoring his second. As said before, Chennaiyin best moments in the match, other than the goal itself, was whenever Jayesh Rane and Jeje are on the ball. Their worst certainly seems to be when the goalkeeper is being called into action.

Big miss for Delhi Dynamos in the 12th minute. Richard Gadze tucked in a ball that bounced back from the keeper’s hands but the Delhi forward was ruled offside. Still all-square.

10 mins gone, Chennaiyin FC 0-0 Delhi Dynamos

Delhi initially kept the pressure on the home side with consecutive corners but it is fair to say that neither side seems to be getting a grip on the match. On a positive not though, Indian players especially Jayesh Rane and Jeje are the ones providing some excitement on the ball. Bodes well for Indian football, which is the most important thing.

Chennaiyin’s last match was a thriller but there is little doubt that the champions made it difficult for themselves after securing the lead. Atletico de Kolkata’s one goal advantage was negated and overturned in no time by Chennai. But, instead of taking advantage of the deflated morales of their opponents, Chennaiyin seemed to grow more tired with each passing minutes and were giving the ball away in the most incredulous ways culminating in a penalty. These are mistakes that Materazzi hopes his side won’t make against Delhi Dynamos who are pretty much unknown factors this year. Let wait and watch how the match pans out.
