If the Indian Super League had a system of promotion or relegation, FC Goa would by now be ‘favourites for relegation.’ It’s a testimony to the topsy-turvy nature that this league has shown since its inception that the team that were finalists just the previous season are yet to win a point from their first three matches in the next.

FC Goa have been the better team for many parts of their previous matches but, against Chennaiyin on Thursday, they were completely outclassed by a team that seemed to be out to prove their manager wrong. Materazzi did question the quality of many of his players and he seems to have been answered by the players themselves.  Indian striker Jeje didn’t play the match but Chennaiyin’s midfield duo of Hans Mulder and Mehrajuddin Wadoo were the ones that took the game to the opposition. The second half was all about a determined Chennaiyin defence not only fending off Goa attacks, but also becoming the originators for counter attacks.

Its a rematch of last year’s thrilling final but the two teams have pretty lame duck starts considering the circumstances. Chennaiyin have got one point in their last two matches with their last match being a rather embarrassing defeat to Delhi Dynamos at home. Marco Materazzi is not a man who minces his words and made sure that his team is aware of his unhappiness with their performances through the comments he made not just after the last match but even before this one.

Zico, on the other hand, has been more motivational than critical in his comments and rightly so, since it is fair to say that lady luck has some role to play in Goa’s lack of points in the ISL thus far. The match is being played out in Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, also called the Marina stadium which had watched in stunned silence as their team slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Delhi Dynamos with below par performances from almost all players. Lets see which of these two teams can find their feet today.

John Arne Riise had said in an interview today that he feels that Indian players in the team are improving and named Jayesh Rane and Jeje in particular. Couldn’t agree with him more. Chennaiyin FC’s game against Delhi Dynamos was enjoyable only when any of the two were on the ball. Jayesh Rane was a real handfull for the Delhi defendors from the flanks while Jeje was strong and energetic through the middle. It is quite a credit to the Delhi defense that they were able to stop either of them from scoring. Can FC Goa do the same. Seeing their defensive failures in their last two matches, it is safe to say that Zico may have drawn special plans for Jeje and Rane.

10′ gone Chennaiyin FC 0-0 FC Goa

A bit of sparing from both sides but no decisive move. FC Goa goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani was called into action when a dangerous ball was whipped into the box. The ball did bounce off his hands but the charging Baljit Sahni couldn’t get to it.

GOAL!! Chennaiyin FC 1-0 FC Goa

Hans Mulder has got a mean right foot. He showed that in the first match for Chennaiyin, and he has done it even better her. He received the ball Augusto, ran a little into the space that was there in front of him and unleashed a shot from outside the box. The goalkeeper had no chance.

GOAL!! Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa (Wadoo 25′)

As it turns out, Chennaiyin FC have not just held on to their lead, they have gone and doubled it. The defending champions had the recurring problem of conceding right after scoring but this time, they kept away the Goa attacks and looked to hit on the counter. It was on one such counter that Mehrajuddin Wadoo found himself at the end of and made no mistake in finishing it. Materazzi was gesturing his players to calm down, but the champions seem to be flying again.

34′ Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa

FC Goa had a fantastic chance when they forced a corner. It was taken quickly and the home side seemed to be caught off guard. The ball was lofted into the box and Jofre rose to meet the header. It was almost a free header as the Chennaiyin FC defendor couldn’t match the height to which he had jumped up to. The goalkeepr was well out of position and the part of goal close to Jofre was wide open. But he headed the ball wide to the relief of almost all in the stadium. It was almost a sitter and the ball ended up missing the target.

Half Time!! Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa

It’s the home team in firm control of the match at the moment. Since the Chennaiyin scored that first goal, Goa have hit them with wave after wave of attacks but the champions held on and frequently troubled the opposition. The effort paid off and ten minutes after they scored the first goal, Chennaiyin found the back of the net again with an unlikely goalscorer. Later replays do show that the ball may have take a heavy deflection from one of the Goa defendors but Mehrajuddin Wadoo seems to have got the credit for it. He dies deserve it though; he is always the man who gives his most in every match in the less glamorous role of being in the defensive midfield. Goa had their chances, especially the one that is described in the earlier post but either it was seen away by the Chennaiyin defence or fizzled off because of miscommunication. As if now, the champions are in the driving seat.

55′ Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa

Tempers starting to flare and it seems it is the losing side that are the frustrated ones, as we would expect. An altercation between two players led to a significant portion of the two teams coming together. Fortunately, things didn’t get too nasty and the referee didn’t have to show any cards. The game moved on and Goa are certainly holding the ball ore than their opponents. If only their attackers like Trindade would stop falling over every time they are touched by a defendor in the box, and Goa does seem to have a chance of scoring. They cant’ risk putting too many players up ahead as Chennaiyin are still troubling them with counters wuith Succi almost making it three for the home side.

75′ Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa

Goa’s attacks are becoming more persistenc with each passing minute. FC Goa certainly have the better possession than their opponents in the second half but there has been very little that they have been able to do with it. Chennaiyin have been rigid and it seems Materazzi has, after all, instilled some typically Italian defensive tactics on the team. And so whenever their box is under attack, almost everyone except the wingers and the strikers crowd out the attack and quickly pass the ball to one of the three. They lauch a counter that somehow Goa has been able to see off. Chennaiyin FC have been organised throughout the match. In their earlier two matches, this organisation could be seen only in the first few minutes.

85′ Chennaiyin FC 2-0 FC Goa

Chennaiyin FC are moving towards what could be their first victory of their season, unless they have a sensational defensive break down accompanied by some extraordinary football from FC Goa.Both look unlikely, the second scenario more than the first, and it seems Goa’s woes are only increasing now. Their goal difference will have gone down to -5 if the scire remains like this and they will be rooted at the bottom.
