NorthEast United scored early in the game and subsequently conceded late to end the match with one point and second from the bottom. Velez was the man who gave them the lead after he latched on to a lose ball in the box within the first five minutes. He skillfully took it away from Majumder and helped it home.

Atletico de Kolkata regained their composure and form at the back in the second half and always looked like inches away from scoring an equaliser. NorthEast held off untill the 89th minute when Iain Hume charged onto a deflected header fromk a free kick to give his team the equaliser. Both managers are going to be dissapointed with the two points lost.

Build Up

Atletico de Kolkata and NorthEast United FC will be forced to take a few risks as they fight for a place in the semi-finals of Hero Indian Super League.

Three points and three places separate the two teams in this edition of ISL at the moment, but coaches of both teams will be aware that tables can turn with three points at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, Kolkata, on Thursday.

Atletico de Kolkata, who won the opening edition of ISL in 2014, were unbeaten in the first five matches of the league and were cruising along nicely but they have already lost twice in the last four matches and know that any more slip-ups can cost them a place among the top four.

In the last match, Atletico de Kolkata had a great chance to solidify their position but the former champions allowed Delhi Dynamos to escape with a draw despite having a player advantage.

“I think we did a great job in the first half but did not have the same intensity in the second session,” Atletico de Kolkata coach reflected after the 2-2 draw against Delhi Dynamos.

More than Atletico de Kolkata, three points will be an absolute must for NorthEast United FC. The visitors started their campaign in fine form, winning three of their first four matches but they have failed to win any of their last five matches. Worse for NorthEast, they have failed to fire up front with only three different players scoring for them, the fewest tally by any team in ISL 2016.

The loss in the last match against FC Goa will be painful for Nelo Vingada’s side as they surrendered the early advantage and lost despite having an additional player on the field. The Portuguese coach assumed responsibility for the loss but has not given up.

“It was a big and strong defeat for me and we missed a very good chance to get three points, and yes after this defeat the morale is down but we are not finished as nobody has qualified yet. My target for the club is to reach the semi-finals but (the loss against FC Goa meant) we took two steps back,” said Vingada.

NorthEast United are the only team to lose four matches in a row but they will be encouraged with the return of top scorer Emiliano Alfaro and key midfielder Romaric. Alfaro was suspended for the last match with four bookings while an injured Romaric came on as a 79th minute substitute against Goa. Both are likely to start against ATK and play big roles.

NorthEast are placed seventh on the table with 10 points from nine matches. A win will take them to the top four and Vingada will not want to be left out again.

Here are the starting XIs:

GOAL!! Atletico De Kolkata 0-1 NorthEast United (Velez 4′)

How about that! exactly the start that ATK were hoping not to have. Total chaos at the back and the ball was gifted to Velez right inside the box. Velez skillfully took it away from the goalkeeper and scored.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:13 pm

NorthEast may have lost their previous match against FC Goa but they played well as an attacking unit. They seem to be continuing in the same vein as they are comfortable giving ATK most of the possession and are breaking time and again on the counter. 10′ have raced away with the away side ahead

Its a game between two teams with two very different approaches to the game. While ATK is looking to build attacks, NorthEast is looking to spring on the counter. One team is looking to keep possession while the other is trying to make the most of it, even if it is lesser. So far, it is a slip up that has let down ATK

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:21 pm

20′ gone ATL 0-1 NorthEast United
Javi Lara’s lofted pass from one end pf the field to the other to find Didika was something that lifted the crowd up. The Indian couldn’t hold on to the ball though. ATK are looking weak down the middle and that is something that NorthEast are taking advantage of.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:29 pm

Helder Postiga managed to get some space in the box and took the shot. It went wide but Postiga showed what he can do with even a little bit of space. It was the first shot for the home side and it came in the 27th minute.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:32 pm

Atletico de Kolkata seem to be getting a hang of how to restrict the NorthEast counter attacks by defending down the middle and not letting the away side’s attackers run them down. It is also giving Iain Hume and Postiga more freedom in attack.

If you are wondering what a gift on a football field is, look at this:

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:40 pm

Steven Pearson latched on to a ball that came off a NorthEast defendor. He couldn’t get the power or direction and the ball went straight to the goalkeeper. ATK still behind despite the flurry of chances in the past few minutes.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20167:44 pm

NorthEast need to find another goal as ATK get more and more comfortable on the ball. The tactic of sitting back and hitting on the counter seemed to be working until the home side started to block out the spaces in the middle. At the same time, ATK need to stop giving the ball away in their own half. As we approach half time, NorthEast seem to be trying to see off the remaining period left.

Half-time!! Atletico de Kolkata 0-1 NorthEast United (Velez 4′)

It could have been a very different story if NorthEast had not got the gift as ATK are looking like the team with the better grip on the match. But luck has favoured the away side and all credit to Velez for keeping a cool head when he got the ball in the middle of the box. ATK have recovered well and have threatened the NorthEast goal time and again. But its goals and not chances that win matches and it looks like both sides could use at least one in the second half.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:07 pm

Mondal with a cynical foul on Katsumi when the man from Japan turned away from the Indian defendor. Mondal extended his hand and ended up striking Katsumi on the back of the net. Quit a slow start to the second half, compared to the madness that could be seen in the first half.

55′ gone ATK 0-1 NorthEast

Javi Lara took the corner and that seemed to be swerving straight into the far corner. Subrata Paul missed the ball in flight and it was Robin Gurung was the man who headed it off the line. Would have been quite a goal and a bit of an embarrassment for Paul had it gone in but all credit to Gurubng

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:22 pm

Its a bit of a stalemate at the moment and NorthEast won’t mind it one bit. But Atletico de Kolkata seemed to have found a way when Hume played a fantastic ball to the feet of Javi Lara. Lara’s missed pass drifted away to the winger but NorthEast manage to makle that a corner which came to nothing.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:25 pm

66′ gone ATK 0-1 NorthEast United

That was a good, quick attack from NorthEast but Javi lara could not keep the shot on target and the ball flew above the goal post. Sameehg Doutie sitting in the stands. Wonder if ATK would have disturbed the net by now if he was on the field.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:30 pm

Afaro tried to make too much of a challenge and ended up clinging on to the legs of the defendor behind him. Needless to say, the referee caught the bluff.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:32 pm

73′ gone ATK 0-1 NorthEast
A chance for NorthEast United as a cross was swun into the box and Alfaro connected with a diving header. But the shot went straight to the ghoalkeeper.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:39 pm

It may be only a one goal difference but it looks like a mountain to climb for Atletico de kolkata. They are trying and trying to break the NorthEast defence but they are not even getting to get a shot on target. Whenever they do, it is goinf straight into the hands of Subrata Paul. Both goalkeepers haven’t had much to do in this match and Subrata is certainly the luckier custodian than Majumder at the other end.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:46 pm

Velez left it off for a teammate to take a shot. Seityasen’s shot was deflected and the ball raced to Alfaro who curiously, headed it back to the golakeeper who was on the ground in an attempt to save the earlier shot. Majumder still had a lot to do and he was able to make the save but Aflaro had an entire goal to aim at and he chose the corner where the goalkeeper was trying to spot the ball.

rohitmundayurie November 17, 20168:49 pm

GOAL!! Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 NorthEast united (Hume 89′)

Iain Hume has scored against every team in the ISL except NorthEast and what a time to break that run. The header from a free kick went past the face of the goal but Hume came charging in and slammed it into the back of the net. Its another last minute goal that has hurt NorthEast, they will now hope its not a repeat of what happened against Goa.

FULL TIME!! Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 NorthEast United (Velez 4′, Hume 89′)

Two goals at two ends of the game has ensured that we don’t have a clear winner walking out of the Rabindra Sarobar stadium. ATK seemed to have some difficulty in handling the pace with which NorthEast were breaking on the counter attacks in the minutes after the goal but they soon settled in. It always did look like ATK are going to score a goal at some point and that goal came at the very end of the match.

Both teams would be dissapointed with the result. NorthEast United remain at the bottom half of the table and are ahead of FC Goa only by virtue of goal difference. ATK could have gone up to second but they remain fourth. Hence, every team in this league are either level on points with the team below them or just one point ahead with top four on 17, 16, 15 and 14 points. If this is not the mark of an unpredictable league, I don’t know what is.
