The match turned put to be much closer than expected. Atletico de Kolkata took the early lead with a brilliant volley from Doutie. The first half was then all about Goa trying to work out something and failing and Kolkata wasting opportunities to go even further up.

Those misses looked even costlier when they were reduced to 10 men with Stephen Pearson getting a red card. FC Goa could not take advantage of the situation and ended up going one man down themselves when Sanjay Balmuchu was sent off. But they could provoke a penalty with the referee deciding to penalise Kolkata skipper Borja Fernandez inside the box. Joffre stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake with it. In the end, the two teams had to settle for a point each.

Atletico de Kolkata are unlikely to let go of the chance to compound the woes of their fierce rivals as they take on FC Goa in a fourth round encounter of the Hero Indian Super League at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, Kolkata, on Sunday.

Atletico de Kolkata are chugging along nicely in the Hero ISL with five points in their first three matches but their rivals from Goa are at the bottom of the table, unable to win in three attempts. Goa’s start this year has been the worst in three years and Atletico de Kolkata, who enjoy an unbeaten record against FC Goa in previous six matches, will try to capitalise on both their form and psychology advantage, to add to their points tally.

“I am sure it will be a tough match,” Atletico de Kolkata chief coach Jose Molina warned during the pre-match media briefing, knowing well Goa will do everything in their capacity to get points on board.

“FC Goa have not won as yet and they will fight to register a win. It’s not a problem for us. I am confident on my players, but at the same time I don’t want to be over confident. We are playing at home and we have to try to win. All of us, which includes me and the players, will give our best to win,” said the Spanish coach.

Atletico de Kolkata though unbeaten till now, has two draw and only one win in their kitty. The inaugural year champions shared the spoils with Chennaiyin FC in the opening match at their new home ground Rabindra Sarobar on 2nd Oct, then pocketed all points from Kerala Blasters and drew against Mumbai City FC in their last match.

FC Goa, on the otherhand, have had the worst start to their campaign in the ISL, losing against NorthEast United FC, FC Pune City and defending champions Chennaiyin FC. Chief coach Zico, knows from past experience in the ISL that all is still not lost for his club and the players.

“If we win two games we will be at par with ATK. So nothing is lost yet. In this tournament it does not matter if you finish first or fourth. What matters is making the play-offs. We are focussed on that. ATK are a nice
side and we will do our best to neutralise their power,” said Zico.

The FC Goa line-up has not had a settled look and chief Zico will have to make quite a few big decisions. The choice of a goalkeeper will be uppermost on his mind as Laxmikant Kattimani has not been as impressive as last season in the first three matches and Subhasish Roy Choudhury is struggling with his fitness. Sukhadev Patil is the third goalkeeper, signed as part of Goa’s developmental player quota, and it remains to be seen if Zico is willing to consider him.

“All the matches that we have to play are tough games. We must have the strength to rectify the situation, especially against Atletico de Kolkata which is a strong team,” said Zico.

GOAL!! (6′ Doutie) Atletico de Kolkata 1-0 FC Goa

It was a poorly taken corner that Goa dealt with in even poorer manner. The ball finally went outside the box but fell sweetly for Doutie who caught it on the volley and hammered it home. Paul Scholes would have smiled

20′ gone ATK 1-0 FC Goa

FC Goa are trying to attack but to no avail. ATK are holding on to the ball more. Goa manager Zico is looking frustrated on the touchline and one really can’t blame him. His team have been second best in all departments in this match so far.

30′ gone ATK 1-0 FC Goa

Zico is cutting a frustrated figure on the touchline. FC Goa had some very good chances but the players have pulled the triggere at the wrong moments and a promising looking attack ends with, in one case, the ball in the stands behind the goal.

40′ gone ATK 1-0 FC Goa

Atletico de Kolkata had a few chances to go further ahead but the fact remains that Goa, even during periods when they have possession of the ball are looking out of sorts. What must be frustrating for Zico must be how easily his team lets go of the ball at critical junctures.

HALF TIME!! Atletico de Kolkata 1-0 FC Goa

There is nowhere that FC Goa can hide. The margin may only be 1-0 but the visitors have been second best in all departments. Atletico de Kolkata had a few very good chances and they could very easily have been two or three goals up and Goa need to find a way to get their defence together if they hope of getting anything out of this match.

51′ RED CARD Stephen Pearson (ATK)

This will change a few things, both ATK and Goa had started the half shabbily and quite a few tackles were flying about. Pearson’s challenge was one that knocked his victim off his feet. There was no way Pearson could have got to the ball and it ended being a rash challenge. The referee gave a straight red. Atletico de Kokata down to 10 men

60′ RED CARD Sanjay Balmuchu (FC Goa)

It seems it is FC Goa simply can’t take advantage of any situation presented to them. Balmuchu only needed to make sure Javi Lara was not able to proceed any further but ended up making a sliding tackle. Lara kicked the ball off at the right moment and the full force of Balmuchu’s tackle came on his feet. It may nit have been a challenge that could have got one sent off but Balmuchu was already on a yellow card and it was a bookable offence. The referee gave the second yellow and the red card followed.

70′ gone ATK 1-0 FC Goa

Its a bit of stalemate here. Both teams are unable to make any real threat to the opposition half. The best chance in the second possibly came when Iain Hume made a brilliant driven attempt at goal from outside the box. It took a diving save from the goalkeeper to keep that out.

76′ GOAL!! ATK 1-1 FC Goa (Joffrey Gonzales)

Borja Fernandez gets penalised for a questionable hand-ball. Regardless, it is given as a penalty and Joffrey made no mistake as he stepped up and slotted it home. As it stands, Goa earned their firsts point of the season

FULL TIME!! Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 FC Goa

Two red cards and a controversial penalty decided the game and that always leaves a one with a bad taste after the match. Players from both the teams came together after the match to wish each other and the managers did shake hands but there was palpable tension on the pitch throughout the match. The match itself, though, was dissapointing and low on quality and speed. At the end of it all, FC Goa have finally got their first point of the season. How happy Zico will be with that, is a different matter.
