The game has been end-to-end since the referee blew the whistle and, save for a few moments, it remained so throughout the 90 minutes in the Rabindra Sarobar stadium. Atletico de Kolkata were the ones to draw first blood with a goal from Sameehg Doutie. But Chennai were quick to respond with a goal from Jayesh Rane. Before Atletico de Kolkata could even settle, Chennaiyin broke their defence once again. Hans Mulder whipped one in and the deflection that it took from Kolkata defender Arroyo wrong-footed the goalkeeper and Chennaiyin were ahead witihin five minutes of conceding.

The visitors then started making errors which, finally, culminated in a penalty for Atletico de Kolkata. Iain Hume took it and the Canadian made not mistake as he equalised for the home side. Neither side could pull away after that and the referee finally called an end to the match with the two teams sharing the honours.

FULL TIME!!! ATK 2-2 Chennaiyin FC

We did hope for a good match and we got one. The two teams were attacking and counter attacking all throughout the first half. The goals started flowing in from the 66th minute with Doutie scoring for Atletico de Kolkata. Chennaiyin responded incredibly with an equaliser from Jayesh Rane and another goal from Hans Mulder’s deflected shot coming in quick succession.

The visitors then seem to have lost the energy in what turned out to be a very humid evening in Kolkata and ATK pressed forward. They were rewarded with a penalty which was converted by ATK’s Mr. Dependable Iain Hume. The two champions , at the end of the day, end up with a point each and NorthEast United’s position at the top of the table remains intact for now.

86th minute GOAL!! ATK 2-2 Chennaiyin FC

ATK get a lifeline here. Iain Hume burries a naive penalty given away by Chennaiyi. As said before, the visitors look more tired and Kolkata took advantage of that and dispatched a ball into the box. It was certainly not a threatening one and still the Chennaiyin defender madea challenge on the ATk man at the end of it. Hume, who has been brilliant so far, doesn’t make any mistakes.

There is a bit of doubt over whether Chennaiyin’s second goal ca be credited with the goal as it did take a big deflection from Chennaiyin’s no.4 as it went in. ATK organisational problems continue, Iain Hume again having to play a deep midfield role as he makes up for the inertness of the players in that position.

80th min ATK 1-2 Chennaiyin FC

The game has just sped up since the 66th minute when ATK’s goal went in. The Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Dwayne Ker, though, looks tired and he gave the ball away cheaply from a very poor goal kick. This lead to a chance for Iain Hume which Ker held on graciously. Chennaiyin, surprisingly are the team looking out of breath and are finding it difficult to keep up with Postiga and Hume. Marco Materazzi getting animated every time his team loses the ball, which is happening quite often.

GOAL!! 70th minute ATK 1-2 Chennaiyin FC.

Hans Mulder the man who turns it around. Chennaiyin, within five minutes of conceding have gone ahead. The stadium has been silenced.

GOAL!! 66th minute ATK 1-1 Chennaiyin FC

The visitors have pulled one back. Jeje set up Jayesh Rane and its all square again

GOAL!! 59th minute ATK 1-0 Chennaiyin FC.

A lovely combination between Hume and Postiga that released South Africa Sameehg Doutie. Doutie didn’t make any mistake and eased the ball in. The home side are ahead!

48th minute ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin FC John Arne Riise takes the free kick from angle, manages to keep it on target and the goalkeeperpunches it away triggering a counter from ATK. Lara took the shot at the end of it and the Chennaiyin goalkeeper saved it.

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20168:04 pm

The second-half is underway and its started with a threatening move from ATK. Javi Lara danced past the defense and had a nice shot at goal but Riise was there to rescue Chennaiyin. ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin

HALF-TIME at the Rabindra Sarobar stadium and its ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin FC. It has been a half that has swung both ways. The enduring image from it would certainly be John Arne Riise pulling back the years as he hammered in a free kick. It may have hot the post but it reminded us of the power of the Norwegian’s left-foot. Another one would be Mehrajuddin Wadoo’s timely header that denied Iain Hume a goalscoring opportunity. It has been a half that went by with break neck speed, let’s hope it remains that way in the second half with a few goals added to the mix.

40th minute. Another chance for Helder Postiga as he drives in a shot from outside the box. Chennaiyin goalkeeper dived the right way and made the save. The half has been a see-saw and now, its ATK doing the attacking

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:39 pm

The owners are all there in the stands. Sourav Ganguly for Atletico de Kolkata and Abhishek Bachchan for Chennaiyin FC.

33rd min ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin. A great ball in from Helder Postiga from the right hand-side. It was set up beautifully for Hume but Mehrajuddin Wadoo somehow got there before the Canadian could. If not for him, ATK would have been one goal up. ATK may look disorganised but Postiga is causing a lot of problems for Chennaiyin

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:29 pm

Chance for Helder Postiga in the 27th minute but the Portuguese misses the goal from outside the box. Chennaiyin now keeping the ball better than their opponents. As of now it seems the visitors may just be the more organised team than ATK. There have been quite a few instances when ATK forward Iain Hume has had to come back to help in defense. A forward having to defend never bodes well.

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:24 pm

A rare instance of a foul throw here in the 23rd minute. It’s John Arne Riise of all people who has been penalised for it.

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:22 pm

20 mins gone and its still ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin thanks to Bernard Mendy. The French defender put his body on the line to deflect a shot from the ATK forward. Chennaiyin responded immediately with a shot from distance which forced a fabulous diving save from Majumder

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:17 pm

ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin FC after 15 minutes. It’s hard to tell which of these two teams can pull away. Both are showing intent and one team’s attack is countered by the other’s. Great game so far at Kolkata.

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20167:11 pm

10 mins gone, ATK 0-0 Chennaiyin. John Arne Riise nearly belted in a free-kick in the 6th minute. A powerful shot that hit the woodwork and clattered onto the ground. Chennaiyin were appealing for the goal but referee let the play continue. The ball did take a deflection from the wall. A very different first 10 minutes from the one we saw yesterday in the first match. Both teams have been going about it the right way and both goalkeepers have been troubled.

rohitmundayurie October 2, 20166:59 pm

The stage is set as the two teams walk out onto the pitch. Borja Fernandez wears the captain’s armband for the hosts while Bernard Mendy leads Chennaiyin FC. The Rabindra Sarobar stadium may not have the same atmosphere as the majestic Salt Lake which has been ATK’s home for the last two seasons. But Kolkata has turned out in numbers and have given their side’s first match a special atmoshpere.

The two lineups are here:

The first match of the season between NorthEast United and Kerala Blasters is followed by today’s game between Atletico de Kolkata and Chennaiyin FC. While the first match was a low scoring one, it was full of intensity with NorthEast claiming better possession of the ball for most of the match. Kerala in the first half seemed to be content with defending and hitting their opponents on the counter a few good chances went ammiss for the visitors.

NorthEast finally found the breakthrough with a goal from Japanese forward Katsumi Yusa provided by Argentine winger Nicolas Vele. After that, NorthEast controlled much of the match which at the final whistle, remained 1-0 in the home side’s favour.

We will have to wait and see if today’s match in Kolkata can live up or even better the performance that the two teams put up at Guwahati.
