Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has agreed to a contract extension of fours years which will keep him at the club until 2021. The 30-year-old, who joined Barcelona at the age of 13, will sign the deal when he returns to training for pre-season.

The Argentinian’s previous deal, penned in May 2014, was entering the final year of the deal. Barcelona have been attempting to tie him to extended terms and on Wednesday former La Liga champions announced the deal on Twitter.

The Argentina forward has scored 507 goals in 583 appearances since his debut in 2004. As per the reports, the new deal contains a 300 million euro (£263m). He remains as Barcelona’s highest earner, while his buyout clause has been upped to 300 million euros.

Messi joined Barcelona’s junior academy at the age of 13, and his latest commitment to the club means that he might spend his entire career with the Catalans.

“FC Barcelona and Leo Messi have agreed on a contract renewal that will keep the Argentinian at the club until June 30th, 2021,” a club statement read. “The club is very happy with both the renewal and the commitment of Messi, the best player in history, who has played his full professional career at Barca and has led the team to an era of extraordinary success.”

He now joins teammates and fellow strikers Uruguay’s Luis Suarez and Neymar of Brazil, who signed new deals in the previous edition.
