Penalty expertise at both ends of the pitch gave Benfica a 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Tuesday, all but ending the Ukrainian champion’s hopes of qualifying. Eduardo Salvio put Benfica ahead with a powerfully hit spot-kick in first-half stoppage time and, after the break, goalkeeper Ederson’s penalty save stopped Dynamo Kiev from drawing level.

The win leaves Benfica and Napoli level at the top of Group B on seven points, one ahead of Besiktas, while Dynamo has only one point from four games and will finish last unless it wins both its remaining games.

Benfica produced most of the goalscoring chances, with Alex Grimaldo going close early with a header off a Salvio cross.

Benfica took the lead after a spell of Dynamo pressure, with the penalty being awarded when Domagoj Vida grappled Luisao to the floor at a free-kick.

Dynamo, which struggled to create chances without injured winger Andriy Yarmolenko, pushed for an equalizer after halftime but was nearly 2-0 down soon after when Goncalo Guedes rattled the bar with a fierce shot from long range.

Benfica keeper Ederson was a villain in the 67th minute when he tripped Dynamo’s Derlis Gonzalez and gave away a penalty, but a hero two minutes later when he dived right to push away Junior Moraes spot-kick.
